sessions in Dublin, help

Dear Everybody,

I’m a Hungarian student. This Autumn I’ll go to Ireland, to Dublin for three months.
During this time I would like to play at sessions as much time as I could; (I play the Irish flute for ten years, and for a half year I’ve been learning how to play the Uilleann pipes). The main problem: I’m not a very talented and skilled player. Many people told me that at Irish sessions those people who could not play at certain level are kindly asked to leave are at least to cease playing.

So I am looking for sessions, and my primary point of view is: if I am not as good as I should be not being fired from that place. (If there are some tunes that are very much liked at a certain place, I try to learn them as good as I only can. I would be most happy if I am allowed to play only some tunes at the sessions). (Of course I do not plan to try with Uilleann pipes too, but I’ll bring them with me anyway).
The secondary point of view: as often as it is possible. (I try to gain as much practice as possible).

I would be most grateful for any help.

Ps.:
If somebody knows a cheap accomodation at Dublin I would be very grateful for that also!

Best thing to do would be to find some people, get to know them and have tunes with them. Beats walking in on strangers.

Attending classes at NPU in Henrietta st while you’re in town would seem a good idea, you’d get to know people.

There’s no cheap accomodation in Dublin.

Thank you for the tip and for the super-fast answer!

Depends what you mean by cheap. Do a google for “hostel Dublin” and you’ll find cheap beds as long as you don’t mimd being woken up at 3am by drunken year-outers!

If you happen to make it over to Galway at all (definitely worth a side trip or two while you’re in Dublin), check out this site for their current sessions. The days and venues seem to have changed around a bit since I was there last summer, but they’re a friendly crowd that welcomes all experience levels.

I’m afraid I can’t help with the Dublin scene at all, but best of luck and have a great time!

If you are interested in having some tunes with good people, check out Dunboyne. It is a suburb of Dublin (about 15 minutes to the northwest). Right in the town center there is a pub called Brady’s. Sessions are twice a week and they are some of the nicest people i have played with EVER! They are very warm and fun to play with regardless of your skill level.

If you want to listen, go to the Cobblestone. There is always good music there. Also check out Temple Bar. I know, its is a tourist trap, but there are some really good musicians there.

Hughes Pub in Chanercy Street. (Behind the four courts). Friday night in the snug you will definatly find a welcome, regardless of level as long as you are willing to try.
(Oh yeah Dunboyne isn’t in Dublin it’s in Meath  much as they might wish it wasn’t hee hee)
Pol.

You are correct. It is easy enough to get to from Dublin still

I’m from Dublin so I can tell you about cheap accommodation

Try Isaacs hostel. It’s Dublin city centre, 10euro beds and it’s lovely inside. Very clean not your typical grubby hostel. www.isaacs.ie.

And another tip…try to stay out of temple bar. it’s way too expensive and the pubs aren’t really Irish pubs at all. it’s mainly geared at tourists.

Have fun!!!

I just saw that you’re a musician! They have a special offer for that. Play in the hostel and you get to stay for free…

Sorted ,so if ye get fired frae there ye will be made homeless at the same time and ye can apply to Dublin City council to be rehoused in a nice wee mansion  Only joking
