Searching YouTube for "Trip to Killavil"...

… and I found a financial advisor, Wow! yes how crazy is that? well it turns out this guy is learning to play whistle and is being taught via Blayne Chastian’s on-line whistle learning website no doubt so how cool is that. His “Trip to Killavil” is a straight forward rendition and nice for other beginners to have as a reference for the tune. One thing I’m finding with playing tunes in these video’s is the player should possibly focus on something other than the camera as looking directly into the camera gives them “Rabbit in headlights syndrome”

Well, good on yer man for taking up the pennywhistle, and for wanting to introduce it to his clients who may not even be aware of it. I wonder if he’s a member here.

But a reference for the tune? I doubt that he (or Blayne) would want it taken that way. His recorder-like overtonguing and his lack of bottom hand finger support are both beginner’s mistakes. There’s no proper articulation/ornament or phrasing. And the melody itself is not quite right in a few places. Of course, the A and B parts should also be repeated.

As a reference for the raw notes, a MIDI would do as well. Better, perhaps, as bad as it is. Because from a pedagogical point of view, once you’ve got a wrongly played setting on a whistle in your ear and brain, that’s going to be even harder to get rid of. IMO.

You could just go to the source.
Blaynes subscriction lessons are just wonderful. He teaches both tin whistle and flute.
I’ve been a member for just over a year now and I’d recommend him to anyone.
BTW, Blayne has just updated and expanded his flute tecniques sections.
His Trip to Killavil is one of my favorites, though I’m a long way from playing it as I’d like.

Another favorite Trip to Killavil (also called The Killavil Jig) by Patsy Hanly on the flute.

Gorgeous!
I’ve also seen a YouTube vid of Patsy playing the exact same settings.

Now thinking about it me saying “as a reference” It would have been better to say “Mikes rendition could be used as a yard stick for other complete beginners” and considering your appraisal of Mikes beginner performance  the performance as a yard stick for another beginner to compare his/her performance of the tune in the early stages is a feasible idea. After all Mike is a beginner and he will be working on or progressing towards working on all the critiqued points you made via Blaynes teaching method but beginners will be beginners i.e. not completely technically competent and for me it’s great to see someone take a bash at a tune at this early stage, I’m sure many beginners would agree. With this and many ITM tunes there is distinct lack of beginner performances and even the more competent renditions lack in some way or other but hey I’m bot griping it’s the Internet after all you appreciate what you gets and be glad you got it.
