I Love that video!! All that syncopation and greatness that makes his music his can be seen throughout the movements of his whole body. That video doesn’t seem to have gotten around as much as the ones of his air playing. I really wish more of this stuff was available. NPU should put out a DVD collection of the old players, similar to the “Come West Along the Road” DVD series. They must have lots of footage. I know i saw what looked like some great stuff in the intro to “Art of Uilleann Piping vol 4”. Ennis playing outdoors in what looks like a garden?
That youtube user also has some great other videos, mostly of Donegal fiddling. He has one clip featuring Padraig O’Keeffe…I thought that even photos of him were rare. And another of John Doherty playing the fox chase. Great stuff!!
also, slightly off topic but something ive wanted to ask someone, did Ennis’ “40 yrs…” cd originally come with liner notes? i thought i remember reading about the details of the tracks, but the copy i ordered is bare. I’m interested in knowing when and where the tracks come from etc.. can anyone provide me with details?
The original LP had liner notes from producer Pat Sky; later pressings didn’t. Dunno if any editions of the CDs did, or why they were left out. Don’t think they did much to elaborate on where the recordings came from; Pat listed contributors and it’s up to you to figure out when the tapes were made. Some of the stuff is from Alan Lomax and was recorded in 1951/52 - Pipe on the Hob or Silver Spear medleys for instance. You can tell as the first 30 seconds of these were hosted at lomaxarchive.org, along with other tracks with exact same audio quality. Actually I think Pat got his copies from Peter Kennedy, who featured some of these tracks on issues from his Folktrax label.
Along with that you have stuff Pat himself recorded in the early 70s, like the Lark’s March. That was just one track on a tape Pat issued in the 80s, Master of the Uilleann Pipes. Plus other stuff recorded elsewhere by others.
