Robbie Hughes sets

Hi all,

I am just curious about others who may be playing Robbie Hughes pipes. I have a half set of his that I really like.
Would appreciate hearing from those of you that play his pipes.
Thanks, Arbo.

I have a full set with Joe Kennedy bellows.

I am very happy with them.

PM me if you require more information.

I have a full set, bought from new. I too, am very happy with them.

I know of two other half sets, both of which play very well, with good bright, tuneful chanters.

As far as my own sets goes, unasked, other musicians at sessions quite often say they are a great sounding set.

I have long thought Robbie is an underated maker, but then he has never pushed his talents. He was very good, in fact excellent, to deal with.

Hi Arbo! Would you mind to post a pic of the set? mostly the chanter, because I got a chanter to reed up last week and under several layers of tape over the back D there was a barely visible stamped name, which from the poorly visible letters it seemed to say R.HUGHES.
The owner doesn´t know it´s origin.
Thank you

Sure. Might take a day or so.

I’ve been playing a Robbie Hughes full set for almost 30 years now, most of the time on a professional basis, and I’m absolutely happy with it!
@Marcello: Robbie’s chanters require a slightly tapered staple, and I found making the reeds according to Tim Britton’s method works best for them (“boat shape” reed head).

Thanks both Michael and Arbo.
