i just bought the riverdance music book from thom at the whistle shop. i bought the one that is specifically for the penny whistle. anyways, i wuz just wondering if anybody knew what kind of whistle is on there. if u have any info please tell me. thanx

Hi Brent,
Are you referring to the Low Whistle Davey Spillane plays?
On his web site he writes: “In his performances, Davy plays … his own D100 Uilleann Pipes and Low Whistles exclusively.” He makes his own, and apparently doesn’t endorse anyone elses whistles. I haven’t seen the movie in a while and can’t remember any pennywhistle.
I have his Sea of Dreams CD. It is mostly moody slow low whistle and Ulleann pipes - no high energy pennywhistling. I like it though, I have been working on learning few of the songs on it. The Titanic theme song, and a song titled Inagh.
Have you been tracking your whistle order? You should have received an e-mail telling you that it has been shipped and giving you a UPS tracking number and a web site where you can locate where your whistles are in their journey to you.

Michael Flately ‘restores’ a broken whistle for a wood nymph (or something similar) in either ‘Lord of the Dance’ or the original Riverdance (can’t remember which).

i think we’re talking about 2 different books. the book i’m talking about is at http://www.thewhistleshop.com/catalog/tutorials/irishmusicsongbooks/riverdanceforwhistle/riverdance.html the book has some songs off of the cd. but a cd is included w/the book that has just whistle and guitar. that’s the whistle i was wondering about. so, once again, if u have any info please tell me.

just to let people know it’s not a ‘wood nymph’ it’s called the 'Little Spirit". I have no idea why I am posting this but oh well. It’s the Irish Dancer in me. Oh wait, does anyone have the music for the opening song in Lord Of the Dance, where the Little Spirit is “playing” the tin whistle (IS she really playing?) And yes the Little Spirit is in LOD not RD. Sorry if I sound pissed but my back is hurting and I need it to get better in time for dance.

Where did you order it from? I ordered mine from thom (along with some whistles of course) on a saturday afternoon and received them the next wednesday. It may just be the place you ordered them from or there may be a hold-up somewhere but other than that i don’t know y they haven’t come yet.

Yeah, that’s probably y you’re not getting the book. The book is awesome. It has all the notes and some ornamentation (but most of the time u have 2 add ur own). Anyways, what i really like about it is that it has a whistle playing melody. And it has chords for people playing w/you. And, if you like the book you might want to consider getting the cd (not the play-along, it come’s w/the book). The actaul CD is pretty cool. Also, if you find out what whistle is playing on the cd that comes w/the book could you tell me what it is?

Hey just received my Riverdance pennywhistle book from Thom. It is excellent in the sense that the melody and chords are exactly the same as the show’s. (not all the songs and tunes are there though)
The tunes in there are really complex and because its not pure trad, and has many jazz and pop influences so I have trouble expecting whats to come next sometimes if I play by ear. I will really have to sit down and spend time on this one.
One slight drawback is that the arrangements really stretch your whistle’s pitch limits. In many tunes there are times when you have to play multiple 3rd octave D. My Sindt D is great for playing this clearly, and I probably won’t play the stuff in there with anything else.
On the whole, its an excellent book for whistlers who like Riverdance, and I recommend it especially to people who don’t like to play trad stuff all the time.
P.S. Kard, I have no idea what whistle Ivan Goff is playing but I think it sounds very similiar to what Cormac Breatnach is playing. Very round sound, not breathy. Does anyone else know?
