Ripping CDs on the Mac

Anyone know how to make a purely archival copy of a CD on a Mac (OSX), preferably one which will then play in an audio-CD-player?

Thoughts, comments (other than that you hate Macs)?

Help would be appreciated.

Stuart

Not sure exactly what you mean by “purely archival” but I just use ITunes for burning audio CDs.

So, you just make a new folder in ITUNES, name it what yout want the CD to be named, Then add the tunes you want to the folder and click “Burn CD” and voila!

Was that what you meant?

The way I burn data CDs is just drag the files that you want to the CD icon on the desktop and then drag the CD to the trash which then initializes the CD Burner.

Mac Geeks Unite!

I don’t know what I meant by “purely archival” either. I think I said that to allay the fears that I’m busily trying to break copyright laws.

iTunes won’t leave the files in a format that a plain ol’ audio CD player can read, will it? I don’t want to convert the files to MP3.

Stuart

I play my CDs burned from iTunes on my regular ol’ CD player ALL THE TIME!

And as long as you own the original CD(s), you can make your own mixes or copies FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE as much as you want. What you cannot do is distribute them or sell them.

Yes, ITunes will convert the files automatically from mp3 to redbook standard - or whatever they call it… so that it will play correctly on a CD… “Purely Archivaly” of course…

In Itunes, go under preferences, (under the itunes menu)
click on burning
On disk format select audio cd. (gap between songs of 2
seconds is pretty good)

that should do it. Your CDs will now be in audio format.

Well, I hate Macs… but stick to them since 1984 and 1.1g (Mac)OS!

I also stick to Toast Pro as my prime burning software. Yes, one has to pay for it, but it never failed. So my 1985 Philips CD home Hi-Fi source reads my CDs burnt from vinyl records just as well as the 2000 Pioneer audio in my car.

Yeah, Zoob, I actually did download Toast 5, and it does a great job. I ripped a few CDs that play well in my home deck (Ah! Tjoeb) and a Sony portable.

Stuart

It will if you specify audio rather than MP3 in preferences i think.

I’m alittle confused about the “Thoughts, comments (other than that you hate Macs)?”…I love my Mac, and the few times that I have been forced to use anything other than a Mac, mainly at my high school, I nearly died.

But in the words of my PC addicted best friend: “But I LIKE looking at a boring gray box, and being confused, and frusterated! Macs are too user friendly!!” :astonished:

I’m not kidding that’s really what she said. But looking back at the this post I realize this has no point. I guess I just needed to show some Mac pride.

Then again, some people say “PO-tay-to”, and other’s say “PO-tat-o”. No one’s right or wrong. Same thing with Mac vs. PC.

Caryn

True Caryn, but they’re about equally easy to say. I once asked a PC friend of mine why he persisted and he said: I like doing things the hard way.

Been a while since I got my eMac, but Itunes does have an option to do MP3 instead of audio. I chose audio. I have had no problem playing CDs from the eMac on any other player I have tried.

Mac pride is good. I use a PC at work and it locks up roughly 3 times a week. The tech guy here says that is normal. My eMac has locked up fewer than 5 times (not sure of it is 3 or 4 times) since we got it last November. Not bad at all. That and it is kind of cool to get viruses e-mailed to me and not have to go on red alert. Does anyone even write spyware for the Mac platform?

If I were the sort who would want to dink around with the way my computer goes together, I’d get a PC. I am the sort who wants to plug it in and go. So I have a Mac. Different markets for different users.

If you have toast 5, you should also have the toast audio extractor utility. You’ll need the hard drive space to use it, though. A good way to repeat those archival files you really like.

All mac users/ musicans should also own a copy of BarFly, by Phil Taylor of Scotland, to read, create and print and share abc format tunes. New Carbon version out for OS10.

mac and proud of it.
