I just bought a new high D/C set of Davey’s whistles from a fellow SCUPC member. The set is one fipple with two body tubes.
I have to say, these are amazing instruments. I’ve always wanted a set of O’Riordans, but wasn’t willing to pay the market price for them. Having played a few D and C O’Riordans in the past, I have to say, these are nearly identical. Great clear tone, excellent intonation, efficient, responsive, nice big holes that allow me to produce clear crisp ornaments and easy half-holing. With the large bore, this whistle will take everything I can throw at it and more, and seems impossible to clog.
Its a great set of whistles and I highly recommend them!
Now I am quite tempted to try one of his concert pitch chanters…
Blackwood with silver should be gorgeous. This one is I think cocobola and brass (Davey, please correct me if I’m wrong!). Matches my Kirk Lynch 3/4 set perfectly.
I’ll be putting up my custom Syn Nigerian Teak whistles, just the multi-body set of D/C/Bb (the bottom three, not top whistle), to help finance my new whistle. The teaks have a unique sound, and I like, but my desire to get a greenwood supercedes the desire to keep the set. See below.
I do plan to keep the lone D (topmost whistle) so I have that unique sound. I just don’t play the C and Bb tube enough to keep, and since it’s wood, I think it’s better for someone else to have that will play consistently on them.
Now I just need to wait for my MicFlex to show up so I can record soundclips for each tube.
See that nice green suede pouch my wife made for me? The Greenwood should look nice in there:)
I am quite pleased with my concert pitched cocobolo/ boxwood and brass chanter from David…
… so much so, that I ordered the remainder of the matching full set from him
(complete with matching whistle).
Solid chanter, great tone, and very comfortable in the hands. A real joy to play.
