Rev. Gary Davis

Just found these on Youtube and wanted people who may not have heard
him to see them.

I figure this fellow was J.S. Bach reborn as a blind Harlem street singer.
One of the greatest acoustic guitarists, he fused blues, ragtime and gospel.
He was a Christian preacher, but he wrote the song, Cocaine.

Two gospel tunes.

Oh, Glory, how happy I am!

Rev Gary Davis and Mississippi John Hurt still are my guitar heroes. A friend of mine taught me Gavis’ Candy Man when I was in high school and I can still play it today. I was so glad when a CD of his instrumental music came out. I have the vinyl issue ( blue album) that was my 3rd or 4th LP purchase.

God bless him, you know?

Oh, when I was out in the world of sin
I had no one to be my friend
Jesus came and he taken me in
Glory, hallelu!!!

The guitar appears to be slightly out of tune,
but the song is extraordinary and the
video the best I’ve ever seen. Looks
like Chicago in the 50s/60s
