Black Gospel Music Recommendations

Hi All,

What are some recommended albums of black gospel music? I’ve had some interest in this genre but I’m not sure what’s good. Are there any classic recordings? Hammond organs are a huge plus too, I like Hammond organs..

Merry Christmas!

Though it’s NOT gospel music… it’s a nice display of some Hammond B3 sounds

It was a sad day when they stopped making the B3.

As for gospel, the Mahalia Jackson Apollo sides are wonderful. There is a box set of Sam Cooke’s sides with the Soul Stirrers. Quirky, non-mainstream, but truly wonderful is sister Rosetta Tharpe and even more quirky but just as wonderful is Arizona Dranes. There is a host of great quartet-style singing groups the most influential of which would be the Sensational Nightingales and The Swan Silvertones. Singers well worth catching are Marion Williams, Clara Ward, Aretha Franklin, Professor Alex Bradford and Brother Joe May. Other quartets I love are The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Dixie Humingbirds, The Pilgrim Travelers, The Spirit of Memphis.

Unbelievably wonderful is a box set of vintage gospel records Goodbye Babylon. Black and white performers but not to be missed. This set goes into the history and prehistory of the stuff I think you’re looking for.

Thanks for the recommendations so far, I don’t think quartet style singing is what I had in mind - I was thinking of more on the lines of the exuberant and raw sort of gospel singing featuring stuff like a choir and soloists, something like Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace CD.

Here’s a gospelley Hammond organ clip I like.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMhAM5aicvI

Keep them coming!

Steve Martin’s film, “Leap of Faith”, has some very fine gospel music in it.
