reed sound from whistle type insrument

I wonder if anyone has come across something with whistle fingering but reed sounding, like a simple clarinet but that jumps an octave with over blowing.

Thanks I’ve been thinking about this for years of playing

The only reed instrument that comes to my mind that has the same fingering would be the Galician Bagpipes… That might not be what you had in mind though.

Cheers,
Anders

There’s a kind of Chinese flute called a dizi with the same fingering as a whistle. It has an extra hole between the mouth-hole and the top fingerhole. You cover this hole with a small piece of rice paper and it gives the flute a reedy buzz.

Here is a photo, showing the extra hole, covered with rice paper:

and here’s the whole thing:

You are supposed to use donkey-skin glue to stick the paper on, but I find that saliva works fine.

Obrian suggests a “Kazoo” approach to acquiring Reed Tone. A loose membrane can be used at the anti-nodal point between the top tonehole and the voicing. The same technique can be used as a “face” on the head joint plug, like a Mirliton.

A more complex solution is to use an “Harmonic Bridge”, like this…

Part of the air stream travels up and around the bar to disrupt the second or third oscillation resulting in a gutteral “Reed” tone. The diameter of the bar and its proximity determine the phased resonance.

well the clarinet does have the same fingeringish as the whistle for teh second octave, and it ish works for overblowing, but then i dont know what notes you get with that, the alto sax though has the same fingering, and you use the octave key to go up octaves
