recordings to play along with

i’m sure this is not a new topic, but i’m struggling finding exactly what i’m looking for with the “search” functionality and googling has also not produced satisfactory results. therefore i’ll go straight to the collective memory of the chiff-and-fipplers.

i’m trying to learn tunes by ear and have found i enjoy it most when i can work on them and then play along with recordings.i want to focus on session tunes and was wondering if anyone can recommend some sources. so here’s the question:

can anyone recommend recordings of sessions on either cd or in formats a can download?

i have l.e. mccullough’s session tune cd tutorial, but prefer playing along with live groups or sessions.

cheers!

I have about 9-10 hours of mp3s of live amateur sessions I could send to you on disc. I don’t know how much shipping to germany would be…

These are amateur sessions so there are screwups within tunes, talking, kids yelling etc but it’s how I learned most of mine.

beth -

are the individual sessions/sets too big to attach in an e-mail, in doses - so to speak - to cure my ear problems?

My outgoing box can handle a lot, how much can your incoming take?

I just found the BBC virtual session, I think it is pretty cool.

i’ve got a fairly big pipe with downstream speed of something like 768 kbit/s . let’s try by you sending one session (your favourite) to tom.french@t-online.de

ok?

thanks for this!

the virtual session on bbc is great for practicing at home, but i find my ear-learning is best when i carry the tune around with me and listen to it a lot. as soon as i can hum it or whistle it (lip-whistling), then i’m very close to being able to play it.

so i guess what i’m looking for is something just like the bbc virtual session that i can take with me. the sheet music, however, is not that important, as i’m trying to wean myself of my sheet music habit.

thanks!

Tom I just sent you a big email, if it gets through ok I can send some more. It was 25 megs, the entire session is about 200. I can probably send larger emails if you can handle them on your end.

thanks, beth!

after a bit of nervousness with my e-mail client, it all arrived safely. let’s try the entire session for this rocky mountain boy!

cheers!

oh Beth I wounder if you would consider making a CD for me of your sessions. My harddrive is packed to the max but I sure would like to listen and play along with the real thing. I am going to sessions now but am still way to intemidated to just start playing my whistle. (spoons will do for now) I don`t want to start a stampeed or anything just thought I would ask. I could reimburse you for it.

Sure thing, tom - I always get a couple of requests when this topic comes up. Shoot me an email, please, so I remember.

I would really enjoy a copy too, if it’s not too much trouble. If it is, don’t worry about it. I too need to wean myself off the crutch of sheet music. Thanks, Beth.
