Djm asked me about recordinds Of Felix Doran in another thread. I have been reminded of this recording:

“Felix DORAN, who died in 1972, along with his brother Johnny, killed in 1950 when a wall fell on his caravan, were regarded as the champion Uillean pipers, among Irish travellers and all-Ireland as well. We include 2 tracks on which Felix is joined by 5 other pipers: Dan Doherty, Seamus Dowling, Patrick McAnulty, Liam Rowsome & Sean Seery - recorded by Peter Kennedy and Pete Seeger at the Fladh Cheoil, Clones, Co Monaghan in 1964.”

There’s the Topic LP and the stuff reproduced on the Gentleman Pipers.

Kennedy covers the same concert as the Topic one

In circulation is also a long tape recorded by Breandan Breathnach that is the source of the tunes that he used for Ceol Rince vol 2 and some bits and pieces from other sources, one track on a Comhaltas Lp of Felix playing Craig’s Pipes.

I also have a few tracks of Felix and Bobby Casey recorded in the jacks of some English folkclub

Good stuff.

I guess that is one of the concerns I have about tracking down obscure recordings. The recordings may already have been included in another reproduction, so one has spent a lot of time and money to buy something only to find they already have it on another album.

Personal recordings are something else again. Please PM if you know of a source for these these tapes or CDs (Breathnach, etc.).

I forgot to mention the 78 rpm which is a powerful bit of piping too. And looking at the tracklist Harry posted, I am sure there were more tunes there, Bag of Spuds played by the group, a great racket [surely that wasn’t LIAM Rowsome?].

I was also given a tape made at one of these fleadhs of a session that includes Felix, Michael Gorman and Maggie Barry and a load of others, there are some interesting bits of piping there too.

I’ll check the full track listing when my copy arrives (somebody is taping it for me, I’d prefer not to have to give ‘Folktracks’ money for it).

The notes in my copy of the Folktrax tape says it’s Leo Rowsome.

There was about 10 tracks on Ceolnet recorded by Ciaran MacMathuna in the early 60s. Felix also played Sliabh na mBan on the “comhaltas” LP mentioned by Peter.

I knew it was Leo but like the missing tunes in the tracklist it’s typical Kennedy shoddyness.

I forgot the macMathuna recordings, I remember Boulavogue from that and I wasn’t too taken with it., i suppose Barney Mckenna murdered that one for me :smiley:

I was sent a dub of the Folktrax record years ago, thus depriving poor Peter K. of an income… :frowning: it sounds like Felix is playing the regulators in the quartet of doom pieces, you’d think if Leo were there he’d do the honors. But who knows.
Is Ceolnet still kapput? Their Felix stuff was great.
