Hi all-- our recorder group, the Melrose Consort, will be giving a recital at the Unitarian Church in Saratoga Springs, NY on Friday, Aug 8. If you’re up there for the races and can drag yourself away from the track, we’d love to see you! I can supply time and exact location details as I learn them myself.
Saratoga is a GREAT summer place. In addition to the track, the performing arts center is the summer home of the NY City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra. You’d also want to check out Celtic Treasures in town. Lots of great eateries, etc.
Update-- our concert will be on Friday, Aug 8 at 8 PM. The site is the Unitarian Universalist Church at 624 North Broadway ( the main drag, nust North of the main downtown area). If you’re anywhere nearby, please come! I promise you, recorder music is not really all that bad… ![]()
Indeed!
For those who might be interested, the Ensemble Dreiklang Berlin is doing some remakable things with Recorders (sound samples are available on their web site - http://www.dreiklang-berlin.de/index/en_index.html, including some more traditional cuts). I highly recommend them.

Hi Brewer Paul…
Do you guys have any recordings out?
I got my wife (of Adri’s Dream fame) some Petri recordings, which she loves. I admit, to my great shame, that I myself have been noodling around with an alto re************der and thinking about learning it.
The main reason is that I have discovered a profound a nd disturbing limitation of the whistle. A friend invited me to a Patrick Street concert this spring. Sat in the third row right near the venerable Kevin Burke. They started the gig with Music for a Found Harmonium, the hearing of which was an experience of joyful transcendance for me. The problem is, ain’t no way that can be played on whistle.
But I digress…
Best wishes with the gigs.
No-- this is a really part time thing for all of us . We’ve done several concerts so far, couple of benefits, festivals, etc. With any luck, someone with a fairly good recording setup will be there this time and we will have this one recorded ( recorded recorders?). We hope to make a demo tape or CD from this so we can get other gigs: Weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, receptions,Baroque funerals, high class yard sales, whatever. Playing like this is such a joy that we are open to any suggestions. Pay oour airfare, and we’ll travel, although shipping the harpsichord may get a bit pricey…
