Recorders, EEEEEK!!! :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:

Recorders, EEEEEK!!!

Just think of it as a conical-bore, wood whistle that plays in more than one key. And, yes, cuts and strikes can be played just fine on a recorder. I’m still working on rolls.

Check out these folks:

Piers Adams is as great a virtuoso on the recorder as anyone I’ve heard on ANY instrument, and I’ve heard a LOT of the greats (Perlman, Zuckermann, Segovia, Watts, Stern, etc.)
Best part is, Charlene and I are going to hear Red Priest on Monday at Williams College. Free!! Yipeee!!!

She is not bad,not bad at all.

The other day I was in a music store to buy a harmonica for my grandson. While there I saw a Gill recorder. It was maple and seemed to be well made and only $29.95. Anybody know anything about this brand?

Ron

They’re only fair. For the best bang for the buck, get a good quality plastic one by Yamaha or Zen-On. These plastic instruments are truly superb and nearly indestructible. They look and feel like real Baroque recorders.

The ‘Rosewood’ finish Zen-on models look pretty good too!
If ypu’re buying for your grandson (age not stated),then a plastic model will be much easier to maintain than a wooden model.

Gills are, to be diplomatic, uneven. Getting a decent wood recorder for less than $70-100 for a soprano (and more for the larger ones, of course) is hard to do. I really like my Kung Studios in maple. Of course I like my Kung Superios in palisander better, but they’re several times that price…

For less money, I’ll agree with Paul about the Yamaha (the plastic Rottenburgh series) but disagree on the Zen-On Bressan. The Zen-On is not in tune with itself, never mind anyone else. Much better and for far less money are the Dolmetsch Novas. We have a complete set from Sopranino to bass and love 'em all (except the 'nino). (US sources is www. courtlymusic.com).

Slightly OT?!

Point taken John - I almost put this thread in the ‘Chiff and Fipple Pub’,
But-would You take a RECORDER into a PUB? :astonished:
