Hey everyone,
I have moved and been without internet for a while now, but I’m finally trying to get reconnected to the life. Anyway I have been looking into whistle lessons in the Boston area, I’m looking into the Boston Comhaltas music school in the fall because its inexpensive and close. Has anyone here ever taken lessons there before? What did you all think of them? Also I can already read music and know all the fingering since I have played the (classical) flute since I was eight. I can get a few nice tunes out of my whistle by myself- so should I sign up as intermediate? I would think I would be bored in a beginner class since I already know quite a bit about music.
and also- has anyone here ever taken the leap to Irish flute from classical flute? I was just wondering how difficult of a leap it is, since I can already play a regular flute. Thanks!

I can’t answer your question about teachers in Boston, but I can speak to your flute question. I doubt that you would have serious problems getting a noise out of a simple flute. The basic machanics are close enough to the same. You may find that you will need to adjust your embouchure to get the typical ‘gritty’ Irish sound, but then again - maybe not, if you already like the sound that you produce. Up to you, I suppose.
In regard to lesson difficulty, I tend to hit the intermediate side of things mainly because I’ve got the techno stuff down but am remedial in my understanding of the Irish mode - it’s bounce, rhythm and flow. It’s sounds to me from your post that you might fit into the same category. I don’t know the Comhaltas organization, but my guess would be that the beginner might be a bit basic; if other basic lessons that I’ve seen are an indication.
Welcome (or welcome back),
Erik
edited because I always spell embouchure incorrectly!
