I always thought that the use of the phrase “Pure Drop” was associated
with the Uilleann Pipes. What is the actual source of this term?
I think the term originally referred to home-made liquor.

Poitín (pronounced putcheen or puteen). The original Pure Drop.
Piper/maker M.Dunne’s band is also called The Pure Drop.
Back in the early 1970’s I was staying with Seamus in a little house in Dublin, along with Liam O’Flynn. One day the post delivered a box of Seamus’ new recording"The Pure Drop".
I said " Seamus, lets give a listen". Seamus put one of the records on his Stereo and we stood there listening in stunned silence as we realized that the entire first side of the album was recorded backwards… out came pure gibberish.
Seamus looked at me and with vast irony and wit said "Let those fookers try and figure out how I did that…boy!! Oscar Wilde would have been proud.
