Maybe this question has been asked before, i dunno… but why is it that there are so few women uilleann pipers? maybe there are a lot more than i realize, but almost all the pipers i’ve seen here or on Patrick Darcy’s million-and-one photos have been guys. what’s the deal? any theories?

Perhaps UPs are a male manifestation of obsessive/compulsive disorder?

This is true with most Bagpipes, NSPs and Galician I would say have to be the exception. I guess playing Bagpipes doesn’t apeal as much to women but they sure go crazy over somene who is playing them (especially if they are wearing a Kilt).
Uilleann pipes are such the chick magnet 
it’s strange too that there aren’t any fullscale recordings of female pipers -surely this is something that will be rectified by young pipers coming through at the moment.
PS note to uilliam -this time round hope there’s nothing about my tone that you’re ‘not quite sure about’ - an oddly familiar phrase - I wonder where I might have heard it before?

Most women are far too balanced and intelligent to play the pipes. They know the best instrument is really the fiddle. It tunes right every time, is readily available, is ligh to carry, you can readily buy strings, the note is the same every time you play it! … need I go on?

That, and they just can’t find shoes to match the bag and belt for uilleann pipes. 
I have been meaning to pose this question for some time. There are quite a few ladies that play the Highland Pipes. I was talking to my daughters Irish dance teacher about this subject, around a year ago, and she said that she thought it was odd too. She said she would think more girls would like the Uilleann Pipes.
Well knowing my daughter, she likes to be heard so she might go with a louder instrument.

I thought of a woman that plays Pipes on recordings not a lot, and I think her main instrument is Fiddle: Bridget Regan in Floggin Molly she only plays UPs on a few songs though.
D’Arcy’s new set is quite beautiful, but he already has two girl in his life.

There is a recorded CD of a female piper. Deborah Quigley finished recording her CD, but it has not been released yet. I have heard one song from it and it sounded great – looking forward to the whole CD. Her K&Q set sounds fabulous.
