Howse the set playing …and when do we get to hear them?

[Nearly called in on you 2 wks ago when I got a flat tyre near Falkirk]

Boyd

I saw and heard Heike playing a set which she had made herself and it was excellent. I think she did at least some of the work on my Andreas set with which I am very happy. When I last heard news, she was still teleworking for him in Italy. Has she set up on her own now?

what about female pipers

how come there are no women who have made a complete solo recording of piping?

John not quite sure about your tone!!
Listen to Louise Mulcahy on "A New Dawn.Uilleann Piping,Another Generation."available from na piobairi uilleann.
Boyd ,it plays very well indeed and I hope to see you soon maybe?
Richard, Heike is now back in Germany with Andreas she is also starting University so she will be a very busy bee indeed!!

but am i right to say that there is no complete solo recording (not the new dawn or the pipers rock) out there by a female piper?

if it is it’s strange isn’t it?

John I am not at all sure what your point is !!!I presume a lot of you out there have used the Red Tutor Book? By H.Clarke? Heather Clarke that is there are a lot of tunes on the Tape/CD so that would count as a solo CD.The reason that she kept her gender quite was because of mysogyny.I think she was 18 when she did the book she was a surgeon at my local hospital for a time and a fine piper indeed.Anyways there are lots of excellent pipers(male and female) who haven’t made CDs.
I’m wondering what difference the gender of a player would make to the sound of an instrument?Anyways as I posted this thread in the first place can you stick to the point we were talking about female makers.

Well, there is Susana Seivane, a Galician piper who records and is an excellent piper… for one.

Well now that John has been corrected about women players can yous get back to the thread MAKERS!!!
Anyone know of any others out there apart from Heike?

gender probably has as much to do with the sound a player makes as it does to the type of instrument made

the point i was making was only that i think it’s curious that there’s no complete solo album of piping by a woman

Yes, female makers, and pipers… both are sorely needed in this apparently over-blown world of male dominated “pipes”. How’s that, both for tone and point? And is it ok with me? No… There has to be more. I’m being a little over the top here, I know, but it might be beneficial to all to become aware of women who make pipes, as well as those who play them. Becky Taylor seems a rare treat as a player… and yes, indeed, so does Heike as a maker.

Thanks Uilliam, and John for your query. Anyone else?

Heike is the one who is making my set. I have spoken to her a few times about it, and she is very nice. She says mine are coming up soon!

Stipulating everything to date has been put forth with absolutely the best intentions, I must say in light-hearted needling that I don’t believe we “need” female pipers/pipemakers any more than we “need” those with curly hair or political tendencies.

Of course, if there are a slew of excellent female/curly-haired/political pipesters being suppressed for these characteristics, they should be immediately un-suppressed.

None of this is to say that I don’t think the piping world is a lot richer with us all in the game.

(female, non-curly-haired, moderately political piper)

Liam, Based on your post, (and I mean the words “recently made”), Depending on how recently Heike made your pipes you could quite possibly have one of the few German-made Irish Uilleann Pipes that were made in Italy and sent to their home in Scotland. In fact probably the only one.

(edited for clarity)

So Liam… YOU were the one in front of me! I’m glad to hear that you are enjoying your set. Mine’ll be Concert Pitch. I can’t wait to get them. I am sure it will be worth the wait.

Liam,

Are you sure that Heather Clarke tried to conceal her sex from people on account of misogyny?

I would have thought that anyone learning to play would be open to learning anything of value from whatever source irrespective of considerations such as sex.

Female Pipers?
I am teaching a young girl at the mo’.
Let’s not forget Emer Mayock, the Flute player who is a great great musician and plays pipes. There’s the other Emer too  Pipers are everywhere of every possible design. Look out behind you!!
Cheers
Al

Isn’t there some young girl on a cd called ‘the humours of piping’ - i can’t remember her name

By the way, are women restricted from playing flat chanters on account of having smaller hands?
