Piperlink coming to Portland, OR

I’ve just got word that a venue has been secured for a performance by Piperlink in Portland on their upcoming US tour. They will be performing on Saturday, May 9th at the Buckley Center Auditorium at the University of Portland, 5000 Willamette Blvd., Portland, OR 97203. Tentative start time is 7:30 pm. Ticket prices are TBD, but shouldn’t be more than $15.00. Hopefully we’ll be able to organize a workshop or two for that weekend.

I know there are a few people in and around Portland (and further afield around Eugene and Ashland), that play pipes and read this board, but I haven’t met very many of them face to face. I’m hoping this will be a good opportunity for pipers in Oregon to do a bit of networking, and perhaps finally organize a Portland-area piper’s club. Anyone in the area that’s interested, send me a PM.

A performance in Seattle is also in the works (tentatively on the 8th, I think), so look for an announcement coming from the boys in the piper’s club up there soon.

San Francisco?
Los Angeles?
Fresno?

I’m glad to hear it; I’m a Portland expat now living in Sydney, Australia, so I can’t make it myself, but I attended at the Seamus Ennis Centre outside Dublin last year and really enjoyed it. I’ll send some friends at home the info, and when I come back to town in a year or so I hope to find a thriving Portland Pipers’ Club. If not, we’ll get one going then, even if it’s just you and me on the front porch. Deal?

Hmmm Fresno. Has a good ring to it. Let’s talk to Larry

Yes for SF. May 7 at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley.

The Portland Pipers’ Club was founded 10 years ago. I am President For Life.

You’ll get the invite when the time comes, SP. :tomato:

What the frack is Piperlink, anyway? Description from Na Piobairi Uilleann:

PIPERLINK now gives you a chance to really understand this beguiling instrument. Organised by Na Píobairí Uilleann, the association of uilleann pipers, PIPERLINK will not only see the country’s leading pipers perform at your local venue but will give you a chance to interact with the players and the instrument. Following an audio visual introduction and a demonstration to show how the pipes work, eminent folklorist Seán Donnelly will conduct a entertaining talk on the history of the instrument, navigating a clear path through the development of the pipes, their evolution, the different styles and how to identify them, the great players and the famous ‘piping’ tunes.

PIPERLINK doesn’t stop there. We will also invite you to try out a practice set of pipes and participate in an extensive question and answer session about all aspects of piping. Other topics will include pipers from your locality, modern innovations using the pipes and their use in the accompaniment of songs and in ensembles.

Sounds boss, Seán’s brilliant. I’ll let the local pipemaker know, too.

The piping performances will be given by leading exponents Seán Potts, Seán McKeon, Tommy Keane, Donnacha Dwyer, Jimmy O Brien-Moran, Emmett Gill, Mick O’Brien and Peter Browne

All at once? :boggle: GNUP had Tommy Keane and Gay McKeon, are they the candidates for collapsed reeds this time around? Do let us know more, SP. I’ll discuss your potential for membership with the “Board of Directors” too, har har har! :poke:

Yes, Kevin, please put a good word in for me with the “Board.” And let me know if a pouch of Dunhill tobacco would help expedite my membership application.

I was talking about setting up a local pipers’ club for mere mortals, of course.

As far as I’m aware, Gay McKeon and Tommy Keane will be the headlining act this time around…

markat23dotcom: pipes (& quality microbrews) on the front porch sounds like a deal. Enjoy the antipodean summer and give my regards to the bars around Paddington…

How about “Piperlink” in Pasadena–OK!

Sunday, May 10. 6:00pm at the Neighborhood Church in Pasadena. Tickets $20. Further details as they become available.

We are also working on an Orange County location for Monday, May 11–stay tuned!

Piperlink will appear behind the Zion Curtain in Salt Lake City on Wed., May 13th, venue TBA. We’re totally jazzed about this, and hope for a good turnout not just among pipers, but fans of all genres of traditional music, things Irish, and acoustic music in general.

The line-up is the same as the midwest tour last year, as their visas were still good through this May: Tommy Keane, Gay McKeon, Sean Donnolly, and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh. And Danu is playing here in March, so we get to see her TWICE

Woohoo,
Mark

Yeah, what he said.

The thought of all those pipers getting on the same plane makes me nervous…
