Pipe Maker Dave Evans

G’Day all,
I was talking to a couple of guys last night and they had spoken to me about a pipe maker Dave Evans. One told me he has some Dave Evans pipes and bits and pieces he is thinking of selling. I have never heard of the fellow before and do any of the more knowledgeable know of him or the quality of his pipes etc?

Hi my name is Simon and I’m a pipeaholic in West Yorkshire, UK

I have been playing on and off for about 15 years, and bought my set from Dave (who I have now lost touch with. He used to make pipes in Shrewsbury, England, with his then wife Christine under the name of Soefirne (old Saxon for the river Severn which runs through Shrewsbury, and a full set having seven pipes… clever play on words).

I have a 3/4 set. They are very very pretty, but not too brilliantly made on the technical front- the chanter has always played at very high pressure despite various attempts at re-reeding and has never really been in tune with itself. The overall tone is quite sweet though. The bag was also too small making playing difficult. The drones are very sweet in tone, but the regulators are extremely bad- they are currenlty with Allan Moller, the pipe doctor in Wales who is trying to do something with them- he recons the bores have been made to wide and they always sounded a bit like a dying cow (Sorry, Dave, if you’re out there and reading this…)

I have recently treated myself to a Brian Howard chanter which I am in the process of playing in, having not played for about the last 2 years and having recently got all enthused again…
Anyoine out there in my neck of the woods

Cheers

Simon
