Hi y’all,

I have a good friend, Peter, who lives in Kobe, Japan, and plays in an Irish pub called “Finnegan’s” at Universal Studios Japan, in Osaka.

I recently spent a week visiting with, played a couple of days at the pub. Here’s a photo of the place, hard to believe you’re in a theme park in Japan:

Peter’s on the left on the fiddle, a very good Irish flute player named Hatao-san in the middle, and I’m on the right on the whistle with the tenor banjo in my lap.

this is neat :slight_smile: A couple months ago, I nearly got a 6-month gig as part of a ‘sailor trio’ for disney japan. It woulda been a grand experience!

Hmmm, that trio might be my friends Melanie, Nick, and Jimmy, who play as part of the “Amity Fisherman” at USJ in front of the Jaws attraction. They were formerly at Tokyo Disneyland…

Right off the wall and heading for the left field warning track. Imagine travelling half way around the world to play/drink whatever in a replica of an Irish pub in a Japanese theme park.

I’m going home but I can’t find it! This is a joke – right? ;0 or HoloDeck technology is more advanced than I realize.

Could be. The agent gave me minimal information, and told me that one of the trio in Disney Tokyo was homesick or something and wanted to come home.

Hi Mark,

Nope, this is no joke… You’d be amazed how many phenomenal flute and fiddle players I’ve met while travelling in Japan. There are many weekly sessions in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Peter gets some of the best players in the country to join him at USJ. On my last trip, I had two sessions on two consecutive nights in a pub near Shinjuku station in Tokyo.

Also, if you’re ever in Kyoto, they have a weekly whistle class at the Field pub, just before the regular session.

Now, I will admit, playing at Finnegan’s is pretty surreal, a fake Irish pub in a fake New York, in a theme park, in Osaka, Japan… But the music is always top rate.
