Sessions in Kyoto and Tokyo?

We’re off to Japan, Kyoto & Tokyo tomorrow, Saturday, flying via Denmark and Finland to Nagoya and fiddler Peter D has told us of the Tuesday session in the Field Pub at Kyoto. Are there any recommended open sessions in Tokyo? Not taking the pipes as we’re travelling light, just the flute and a couple of whistles and hoping to borrow a fiddle for a few tunes if there is a session and it’s cool.

That’s so exciting you are going to Tokyo! I was there last year and played in a lovely session at the ‘Cock o’ the Walk’ in the Roppongi district.

Here is a link to the website of a flute player I met there named Yuta:

It lists the times and locations of various sessions. Also, there is a C&F member named Kumamo who gave me some information to get me started.

Happy travels!

If you are in Tokyo on the 12th or 13th, C&F member Innerhand is playing the pipes on those days with a Japanese fiddler and guitar player at two bars in the city.

There are regular sessions around Tokyo and there is also a Comhaltas branch.

Mukade

Thank you very much Domo arigato Il Friscaletto and Mukade. Great links - I hope we can be in Tokyo when one of those sessions is on. We´ll see how it goes. I´ll let you know when we get back around the 20th of October.

There is another renowned session in Tokyo  .

We played at a very nice session last night here in Kyoto and met up with Peter D on fiddle & guitar and some very good Japanese musicians that play Irish trad. including three very good flute players, a concertina player, a piper and three whistle players. The pub (Field) has two sessions a week, Tusdays and Saturdays, and the session was as good as a good session can be in Ireland or Sweden. These musicians play at a very high standard and are very nice people. My partner borrowed Peter’s fiddle and he played his guitar. I had my Murray and also got to play on Terry McGee keyless D & C flutes. Very nice instruments. Kyoto is a cool place to be. We travel to Tokyo tomorrow

I’m so jealous!

Steampacket,

Thanks for the tunes, and letting me try the Murray’s flute.
I hope you enjoy the sessions in Tokyo!

Hey, what did I tell you Thomas? :stuck_out_tongue: You never did respond to my last PM.
Glad you’re having a blast in Japan, I’m very jelous too. I’ve been dreaming of going to Japan for many years now.

Hope you’ve sampled some nice japanese
whisky

I don’t why we waited so long. Just go if you can. Japan is amazing. Here in Tokyo it’s like being on a film set. So much to take in, so many sights and sounds, that now just back in the hostel we’re like zombies. No whiskey so far just Starbucks coffee and Ashanti beer. In Kyoto we had Yuba. Tomorrow we go to the Shop that has 3 floors of Japanese swords to gasp at and we’ll check out the National Museum. Japan isn’t any more expensive than Ireland or Sweden by the way. We’ve found a shop that sells everything for 99 yen (about 7 Swedish crowns or 1 USD)
