Trip to Tokyo, whistles & airlines

Know of any good places to play whistle in Tokyo?

Hints for getting whistles on?..taking carryon luggage only. Is plastic best?

Any places to buy a flute/whistle in Tokyo?

I haven’t flown out of the country…but when I flew to Texas recently, I just took them in a bag…I have a drumstick back that’s been “fixed” to fit my whistles…and I just took them on in that…no one had any problems with it.

Harp,

It might seem like overkill, but you might want to print and carry a copy of this letter - It was posted in another thread by Wanderer

It is a letter from TSA which clearly states that musical instruments are allowed as carry-on items - Just a thought

I’ve played in some very nice sessions in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Contact me via private message and I’ll get you in touch with some folks there…

If you are at all interested in silver concert flutes, be sure to stop by the Yamano music store in the Ginza area. On the 5th floor they have the “Yamano Flute Salon”. There, in a glass display case was more classic Haynes and Powell flutes than I thought was possible, something like 9 Haynes and 6 Powells, plus probably 100 other flutes of similar quality. Most in the $5000 - $20000 range. Having started out as a classically trained silver flute player, this was unbelievable, that so many flutes of this caliber could be in one place. They also had a display case of probably 100 high end headjoints that was astounding. Previously I had played a couple of Haynes, and seen one Powell, this was amazing…

Its just across the street from the Mitsukoshi department store.

Cheers,

Michael

Thanks, have printed letter off.

Eskin, I will indeed PM you.

Have also been in touch with Comhaltas people in Tokyo and hope to meet up with some.

Remember that the TSA’s letter won’t hold any sway over the Japanese authorities.

Also, I wouldn’t buy a whistle in Japan. They are usually imported, which adds to the price.

Well the guys have had no problem thus far taking flute and whistles.

They are having a wonderful time in Tokyo and participated in some CCE activities with the Tokyo CCE chapter.

Very gracious and hospitable people, the Japanese.

I flew to Tokyo from Chicago and back a few months ago. I had a few metal high Ds and big ol’ Overton low F in my carry-on bag. There were no problems at all – no one even asked me to pull them out of the bag so they could see what they were.
