I am going back to Scotland for my next vacation. Dare I carry on my Big Aluminum Low G Whistle? I know it looks as if it is, and could well be a weapon. But it is only sometimes offensive. How will security treat it/me?
The airlines that I’ve been on recently have been very generous about letting musicians carry their instruments on board. If it will fit in the overhead compartment they’re usually okay with it. I’ve travelled with my guitar in a gig bag, and whistles and other instruments in the outer pockets of the gig bag with no problem. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
I’m moving to Australia in 3 months time and have already contacted the airline to advise that I will have a bag with metal whistles as extra hand baggage (Low D, Low F, Bb, high Ds, etc). They’ve noted it so that the check-in desk can clear it. I am however expecting to have to open up the case as soon as I go through that X-ray machine (“this bloke’s trying to bring through a dismantled rifle, as if we wouldn’t notice…” )
I’ve recently traveled by air three times on three different airlines with my brass D. Each time I have simply mentioned at check in, and at X-ray what it was, and where it was located (in case they wanted to see it), and each time there has been no problem. One made me pull the whistle out, just because she wanted to see a tin whistle!
But, so far, no hassles.
