phony English by non-English speakers?

Unless, of course, that speaker is Charlize Theron.

That woman’s accent amazes me. Of course, it’s probably because Afrikaans is so closely related to English, but unless they’re told most people (including me) would never guess that English was not her first language.

The fact that a langauage is not your first language does not mean you won’t be able to speak it like a first language speaker. Its to do with inclination, exposure and “acculturation” if you like. It is not a genetic or a racial thing.

Some people who hear me on the phone are surprised to learn that English is not my first language. And others who hear me speaking Hindi are surprised that IT IS my first language! :astonished:

And there are others who speak many languages with the ease and unaffected naturalness of native speakers.

Peter Seller’s Indian accent for “The Party” was purportedly honed in 1960’s Welsh pubs. Figure that out …

Oh, I know. I meant specifically that her accent in regards to “Standard American English” (such as a person hears on CNN) is absolutely perfect, which, to say the least, is a very difficult accent even for native speakers of other types of English (like me) to approach.

Lester Bangs once mentioned an LP (on Columbia?), The Best of Marcel Marceau. Yes - 40 minutes of silence punctuated with 5 minutes of applause…

Ain’t no SAE on no CNN. I growed up right here in America till I was twelve years old, and I was educated in the public schools, and that’s not the way we talked.

My high school French teacher was from Florida… where she majored in… Spanish! (not kidding here)… and her minor was in French.

Imagine a Spanish major teaching French with a ‘Southern Belle’ accent beneath it all.

No wonder the first time I tried to order food using my high school French, I ended up getting a shoe with cheese on it, and the waiter wanted to know when I could stop by and massage his Grandmother, as I (apparently) had requested.

 :astonished:

Understood. Bu’ we don’ livin normlamerica.
