This is an announcement that I have waited for 20 years to do. I am going to retire from working a straight job on the last day of May. My fiddling wife, Cathy, and I will be moving to Spruce Pine North Carolina soon, where I will set up shop and try to survive like a normal person.
For the first time in many, many years I will be able to travel, so I will be available to do reed making, repair and piping workshops, at house concerts and Tionol’s. So, if anyone out there is planning an event please put me and Cathy on your “possibilities’ list.
Sorry, but always thought you were a professional musician, what with your many albums of folk music. Is that what you are retiring from? (please disregard if you consider this too personal).
Now of course, if you can, be sure to present one of their ‘Vintage’ series…the '88’s were particularly good! If not, may I recommend an Avo, Dunhill, Peterson, or perhaps a good Padron. Similar in flavor, but each with their own distinct character. Any would be appreciated (one hopes!) by a connoisseur of fine cigars and pipes.

They’re quite good. I haven’t smoked anything in some time now truth be told, but did work at a local tinder Box for some years. I was always more of a pipe man myself - untill my home was buglarized and some jackass punk stole my Italian Ascorti that was my pride and joy - very likely to smoke weed in. I replaced it with a new bowl, but it just wasn’t the same.
Ah well. Joe, if ever you make it out here, we’ll make a trip over and enjoy something of the Dominican variety.
Hey- I got some Dunhills and Charatan’s from The Tinder Box’s home store on Wilshire Blvd here in L.A. Haven’t smoked them in years…1978..first time I went to Ireland.
Congrats from Florida man! If it weren’t for my day gig at the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS IN FLORIDA AND TWICE IN A ROW IN MEN’S BASKETBALL UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, I would absolutely be up there around Asheville where you are headed… one of my favorite parts in the entire world. One of these drives up to Virginia to visit my mum I want to swing by for some tunes… it has been WAY too long!
But don’t call it “retirement”… call it a newly revitalized career sans day job… retirement is such a debilitating concept… and you are way too… um… looking for the term… polite term… i give up… too Pat Sky to retire.
