Can anyone tell me anything about Pat Murray pipes? I came across the name recently and have never heard of him before. I’m wondering about the quality of his chanters in specific. Any insight or experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Johnny

I’ve never actually played or even seen a set of their pipes… but I’ve never read/heard anything negative about them. In fact, their work seem to be widely regarded as excellent sets for getting into UPiping.
Didn’t D. M. Quinn have some kind things to say about them a while back?
Played a set of Pats for two years. Loved them. Another local here has one too - equally pleased. Excellent workmanship, great looks too considering their construction materials.

Brian - it may be a trick of the light but it looks like the tone holes on the chanter are scalloped. ![]()
Hi Brian,
The practice set you sent over here by Patrick did look nice. The construction on the chanter and bellows was first class. The plastic cast chanter was done so well it really had the appearance of ebony. After briefly taking some casting in college I can say this was really well done with no seams, gaps etc. The vinyl bag really stunk, but after I tied the new L&M bag on the set it was fine. I don’t know if the fiddler still has the set, I heard she is selling them.
I can’t really comment on how the chanter played. The reeds were freaking out in our climate and I did not have a chance to work on them. I have heard people saying David supports them.
All in all I would say it was a nice set.
The bag and bellows were vinyl on the set I had (which was two years old when I got it myself) and did begin to show signs of wear after almost four years of play. The bag was easily replaced with a new L&M from Seth G. and as you noted the replacement mae a big difference. As I understand it now, Pat offers a leather bag as an option at the time of purchace - I’d suggest it.
A strudent of mine has a practice set by these bucko’s and they are a very fine set. In tune too! The bellows had an issue and the lads took care of it as soon as they could… fair to them!
