Here’s Zoe, whom I’ve started calling Chewpie (not like “chew pie,” but like “chewpie macabra”):
This little girl came to us literally covered in fleas, nearly exsanguinated, dehydrated, malnourished, and basically almost dead.
One month later we have a healthy, happy little ferret who is bouncy and full of life and curious about everything.
This makes five ferrets for us; we’re pretty much at capacity, but we do have other folks who are willing to foster in case more rescues come in. That’s a good thing, because ferrets that find their way into animal shelters are usually unclaimed and eventually put down.
With Jesse (our first rescue ferret), now now Chewpie, we have saved two lives, two very special fuzzies with warm, loving personalities. It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
You know I’m still scared by the idea of having a ferret—you may remember telling me quite a lot about them some time ago—but I am so happy for you that you have another little one in your family. She is such a sweet looking little thing—that face would be very hard to say no to . I’m so glad she has recovered her health. I’ve only nursed a very sick animal once and I found it to be one of the most intense experiences I’d ever been through.
Their wild counterparts (polecats) are. My wife and I owned a bunch of these little weasles, and they paid little or no attention to mice. The cats, on the other hand, were terrorized mercilessly.
Good on you James! She’s a cutie alright. Ferrets are terrific pets.
the ferret I had (Bandit - had a “mask”) would also terrorize the boxer we had at the time. The ferret would lay in hiding until the boxer would lay down someplace, then come out and nip at his jowls. He had been trained NOT to do anything to the ferret - so he would just gaze at us with this “would you please get this thing OFF of me???!!!” look.
We had nine at one time… more fun than mere mortals ought to be allowed, I’m telling you! And though nine seems like a lot, actually, it never seemed as crowded as having three cats or three dogs.
