This little guy (we are calling him Jesse) was found wandering loose in Conway. We are fostering him for the animal shelter until the middle of next week. If no one claims him, at that point we are adopting him.
He has some minor crush injuries and he shows to have lost some weight, but overall his health is good and his teeth show him to be a young ferret. He is extremely friendly, loves to be held, and seems to take great comfort from human contact.
If yaāll donāt mind, please think kind thoughts towards the little guy, as all of us (Shan, myself, and our own 3 fuzzies) would love to have him join our family.
I had a ferret once (masked, like yours, so we called him āBanditā). I never could break him of biting, but the worse part was he kept attacking our boxer, and the boxer knew he wasnāt supposed to ādoā anything to the ferret. After the ferret bit the boxer in the eye, we decided that maybe the ferret should go to a home where he was the only animal.
Update: today, for the first time since heās been in our home, Jesse played.
We have a little plastic ball with a bell inside; he was alternately chasing it about, then rolling over and ājugglingā it with his feet!
Thatās the first time weāve seen him act like a happy ferret. Up till now heās been a sleepy, grateful, exhausted ferretā¦now heās starting to act happy and well-adjusted.
Shannon and I watched, being careful that we were both crying silently, since the big guy might not have understood.
He is. Heās looking a lot better after just a few days of care.
The first two days he did almost nothing but sleep, he would wake just barely long enough to eat and get a drink and attend to necessities, then go back to sleep.
Now heās awake and alert, eating and drinking more, and is acting playful and curious. We have cautiously introduced him to our other 3 ferrets and he is friendly and playful towards them.
He still takes great comfort from being held, and heās still our only ferret you can actually rock to sleep. He gives lots of kisses and just seems thrilled with his new home. Yesterday Shannon was playing with him and held him up to look at his belly, and he started licking her nose.
So we have four ferrets at our house, Bug, Chewie, Aobhiel, and Jesse.
He has a good home with you . . . . . . what a lucky ferret!
Golly gee, I love happy endings!
Do ferrets like music, by the way? I looked up ferrets on the netāsaw that they often smell worse after being washed --but didnāt see anything about their musical tastes.
(My keets love whistleāthey sing alongābut my 'tiel really hates flute.)
The ferrets usually ignore my flute/whistle playing unless Iām in the room with them, in which case it seems to āstir them upā a bitā¦the faster and harder I play, the faster and harder they play.
We bathe our ferrets about every 4-6 months. Ours are descented; they have only a very mild smell unless they get upset, most of the time smelling like strong baby powder to me. If they get preturbed, the scent glands in their neck make them smell a little skunky. Itās not strong and goes away quickly. The big stink glands under the tail have been removed, so they canāt spray the scent.
They do start to smell a bit ārangyā when they need a bath.
Some folks make the mistake of bathing them every week or more, which keeps the glands in their skin continually stimulatedāso yes, in fact, frequent bathing does make them smell worse. It can also irritate their skin and eyes.
Thatās great, there a lot of those little guys out there whoāve been abandoned by their owners. Mine were amazingly affectionate and social, I canāt imagine what they go through when dropped by a family.
