OT: Politrix - - Okay, after knockin the NY Times

If a woman is elected pres, she will
be a Republican and she won’t be identified
as a feminist. Whatever its merits or demerits,
the left takes women too far out of the
mainstream to have a major national
following. It’s the Margeret Thatcher sort
who will make it through.

A very good point, indeed, Jim.
I hadn’t reasoned things out along those lines, I’m just going on the many polls that have been taken that show the majority of American women voters respond that they wouldn’t vote for a woman. Go figure.

I dont have as nearly as bleak an outlook. The Clintons have plenty of problems and plenty of enemies (like most politicians these days) but I think it’s unwise to underestimate them. Another woman to watch (and I’m not kidding) is Oprah. She has a long time left to run as she’s still relatively young, and at any point that she wants to, it would be easy for her to jump right in. She’d have oodles of support and oodles of money for the run.

Well, I’d like to believe that, but we are in the 21st century and this country has not even elected an Italian (or Hispanic, or Black, etc…) yet. So for it to elect a black woman…

But Oprah isn’t just a black woman. She’s a black woman with 10 billion dollars of her own and bi-partisan appeal to tens of millions of daily viewers. She could very easily pull an Arnold move. If she ran as a Republican, I have no doubt in my mind she’d win.

I’m about 99.9% sure that Paul Simon is not Jewish, though I don’t know what religion, if any, he might profess. Certainly its nothing he ever mentioned, but back in those days religion was a matter of personal conscience, not the club (weapon, not social group) that Evangelical Republicanism has turned it into.

In any case, if Paul is Jewish, he’s likely the only one in his original Southern Illinois congressional district. That area is mostly Free Methodist, Baptist, United Methodist, and Church of God, with a solid sprinkling of Catholics and a negligible smattering of “Other”. There aren’t even enough Jews for the local Klan to bother to hate.

Actually, Chuck, I was referring more to his looks and dress and electability (comparing to Lieberman) though the ethnic element was mentioned (you are right, he is a Lutheran). Sometimes people just won’t elect someone who looks odd, by some unknown standard. Never stopped Nixon, Waxman, Nadler and a few others tho. And my favorite, Traficante, the man with a weasel on his head. I perceived Simon as Jewish at the time and wondered if it would work against him, combined with his appearance but he didn’t get that far in primary. At the time, I was a registered Democrat.

Is there a local Klan where you live? Too bad. And I have never heard of Evangelical Republicanism. Sounds like the VRWC (Vast Right Wing Conspiracy) that Hillary invented.

And as for blaming Republicans for religion being used against people instead of keeping it personal, I beg to differ. Chucky Shumer really tore up Miguel Estrada for being a Catholic in judicial appointment and promised to continue doing so. At this point, it would seem that only secular humanists or those whose religion allows support for abortion may serve as judges, no matter how qualified, ethnically diverse or deserving they may be, according to the Democrats. When Ruth Bader Ginsburg was up for confirmation, did any Republicans fight her appointment because she was Jewish? NO. I can’t figure out why a New York Catholic, especially of Hispanic origin, could ever support Shumer again after his latest outburst of glee when Estrada gave up the confirmation process. Talk about a double standard…And for some reason, no one stood up and asked “Have you no decency, Sir?”

Just like other thread contention, the war on religion is being waged by the Left (except TOLERANCE for Islam) vis-a-vis ACLU etc. As for anti-Semitism, the vast amount of Jewish voters may be Dems, but its the right-wing Christians supporting Israel, isnt it? And no, there is no oil to steal in Israel. I acknowledge that anti-Israel is not the same as anti-Semitic, tho. Outside of US, Chirac yesterday refused to condemn an anti-Semitic outburst by the Malaysian leader yesterday, thus blocking a post-summit condemnation. Didn’t make most of the newspapers for some reason.

I really wonder what political ideology IS ultimately anti-Semitic, frankly.

I think we have a local Klan, too, though they’re not very organized.

It might require a triple digit IQ to be organized, though the Mafia has done okay, I guess.

I know of the tattoo that people here have that supposedly signals their hatred of black people, I have only noticed it for certain on one person, but I suspect lots of people have it with the things I hear and see all the time.

I’d vote for Oprah or Hillary in a heartbeat.

Technically I’m jewish, and there’s no way I’d vote for Joe. He’d be the worst choice regarding the mideast situation- it would be twice as bad in Israel w/ him in office. And anti-semitism would rise around the globe.

I’d vote for Oprah on any ticket. She ROCKS!

I think Lieberman should choose Nader as his running mate then we’d have a Jewish American for President and an Arab American for VP.

""Just like other thread contention, the war on religion is being waged by the Left “”

Ah, yes, those poor, down-trodden, discriminated against christians.

Excuse me while I retch my way out of this thread. Nothing gets my goat like watching an abusive majority pretend to be the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

Christians are not the majority religion in this world. In fact they have been murdered in increasing numbers via church bombings in Pakistan and elsewhere as part of the Islamo-Fascist movement worldwide. They are enslaved in the Sudan. They are a minority in those places, as were the Assyrians in Iraq. They are targets of opportunity in the Phillipines as well. Maybe practicing Christians outnumber everyone in your neighborhood, they don’t in mine and in others’.

Your strong language notwithstanding, you didn’t seem to acknowledge who is trying to remove every cross, reference to God etc etc. in this country but chose to bluster your way out of it with extreme statements.
Whatever…

I think Condaleeza Rice has decent shot at being president in our lifetimes. I know the left doesn’t like her much, but I think she could still pull enough votes to win. She needs more domestic and supervisory experience, but I think she could be a strong candidate in 2012 or 2016.

To my current way of thinking, the American people do not trust honorable people because it seems too good to be true. That is the corrosive effect of constant attacks on the country, the flag, the Boy Scouts, the military etc etc. There are acknowledged hero soldiers from this latest Iraq campaign but I have doubts that the American people will honor them, if one is to believe the media characterizations of us.

I think it is one’s patriotic duty to question the usage of the military, or the policies of the president etc etc. But then the right seems to cry treason and call those people unpatriotic. The really hilarious thing is, when Clinton sent troops to Kosovo, the right complained and questioned it plenty. I guess its only ok for them to question things?
