Origin of the name "Schnauzer"?

We have a miniature Schnauzer named Freddie, which is short for Frederica. We enjoy her company very much, so does Branch, our chocolate-covered Lab, but Brillo the cat isn’t so sure. Anyhow, I was wondering about the origin of the name, Schnauzer. Is it named for a person, or what?

Personally, I’ve always thought that the name sounded:

a.) very slightly smutty, :smiling_imp: and

b.) like some kind of automatic weapon, as perhaps used by the Imperial German Army in World War 1 (…the 27th Iniskillings went over the top and gained the first line, but were beaten back by the 312 Leipzig Reserve Regiment with their quick-firing Schanuzers…) :tomato:

Any ideas?

With best regards to all.

I used to know a schnauzer joke, but I can’t repeat it on a family forum…

Schnauzer comes from the German for “not house broken”

schnauzer- “snout” for the furry muzzle

Here’s the history of the Standard Schnauzer- which is the original version.

You can check out the stuff on minatures on the AKC site too

My mutt’s name is Freddi, short for Winifred. Our friend Bill calls her Frederica anyway.

Would that involve a depilatory?

Yup, that’s the one…

   Ayup!

I was going to guess that a schnauzer is someone who schnauzes.
