Offspring never cease to amaze

OK. I’d got used to the idea that my Nirvana loving 19 year old son likes the music from ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?’ but last night in the music room after playing something that sounded extremely metallic on his guitar he picked up one of my whistles and played ‘Little Boy Fishing’, the old Shirley Abicair song. Funny how they can still surprise you after all these years.

I know what you mean JB.

My 11 year old started reading the Bible just out of the blue. He’s a decent, but not avid reader, unlike his older brother. He started on a new translation that was given me by my brother (a Jehovah’s Witness). But then my boy got a King James’ from his mother’s house and brought it here. We don’t attend any church and I hadn’t really decided how to address religion in the house to him or his brother.

Weird thing is, he never asks me about it. I have been trying to figure out a way to very subtly approach it and leave his curiosity and interest intact.

When “O Brother” first came out - my kids had the opinion, “So? That’s the same thing mom and stepdad have been playing for years.”
My two have very, um, wide ranging tastes in music. Oldest likes country - not necessarily the “popular” stuff, but songs by the likes of Charlie Daniels. Also likes 70’s rock.
Youngest likes classical, but seems to know just about any folk song that comes along. Earlier this year, the music teacher started with “The Boatman” (he knew it), then went on to “Going to Cairo” (he knew it). She finally decided to have him help teach the younger students!

Sometimes, some little bit of the things we try to do DOES take!!!
