Ocarinas, anyone?

Does anybody here collect and play ocarinas? I have a Mountain Ocarina, a sweet potatoe ocarina, and one from Clayz. There are all kinds of them out there!

Bwah!!! I would seriously love to have one! The pendant soprano ocarinas are very very cool since they’re so small… Anything that ranges two full octaves?

Cheers,
Armand

My Ti Amo achieves 4 half steps short of 2 chromatic octaves (2 half steps short if you are an expert player like me). AFAIK, there is no other ocarina that has a wider range. Besides this, IMNSHO the only other ocarina worth owning is the Menaglio, if you are truly interested in playing rather than collecting/wearing this instrument.

I love ocarinas.

I have a lovely, silly, and very entertaining album by the Swedish Recorder consort ‘Musica Dolce’,who also play Ocarinas of various sizes.
The album is called ‘From Byrd to Birds’,and ranges from Ren. Recorder consort stuff to ‘Fun’ pieces on Ocarinas (i.e.:'American Patrol’and ‘The Muppet theme’).
The ‘Bass’ Ocarina played is shaped like a blue Penguin wearing a bow tie!!!

Band Nerd, I think that Walden, a frequent poster of long-standing, is interested in ocarinas. (In addition to origami.)

Here you go. Walden’s great ocarina site.

That’s for sure!
My wife and I actually saw these for sale on our honeymoon in Cancun.

I warned you…

I suggest you have a look at “Yahoo Ocarinaclub” (I’m a longtime member). I design and make ocarinas for fun and my friends Richard and Sandy of “Clayz Ocarinas” moderate this group. Tell’m Thomas H. sent you!

There are makers that make “double ocarinas.” They have 2 different fipples w/2 chambers, so you can harmonized with yourself. On some, the sides are in different keys, so I think the player would often get confused  ! I want one, and they are very reasonably priced. I’ll see if I can’t find the link.

The hindocarina site has many other ocarinas as well, and I think his look better than the others.

Here’s an mp3 of me playing a double ocarina with Hawaiian slack-key guitar:

It’s the tune called “Fairest”. (Feel free to check out the other tunes, too! )

This ocarina was custom made by North Country Workshop. The higher pitched chamber is in F; the lower, in C.

LimuHead-

I didn’t get to hear it. :waah: My computer is acting weird, but I’m sure it sounds great! Anything with a double ocarina in it is bound to be awesome!

Collin

The only time I think I’ve heard an ocarina is the solo on “Wild Thing” by The Troggs. Not exactly Irish, but still cool.

I had heard of ocarinas, but I have just been blown away by some of the sound clips I’ve heard on the websites mentioned in this thread. It seems as though the ocarina would be more well known. Its high notes are so pure and not shrill. This group was very impressive:

Also, some of the sound clips on the website of Kenji Ogawa. It is just amazing.

I thought that was a very lovely rendition of that song.

Thanks! It’s been one of my favorite tunes since I was a kid.

Hey Band Nerd - Sorry you weren’t able to listen to it. I’m hoping to offer the One Man Band stuff on CD (for cheap!) when I get a few more tunes recorded. Don’t know when that might be though.
