I just recently came upon the Ocarina and I am quite impressed with the sounds from this compact little whistle like instrument. I’m thinking about getting a Mountain Ocarina. Anyone else out there feel the same?

I have one of the Mountain Ocarina’s in plastic (key of G, I think). It’s a great little instrument. The only limitations are it’s non-tuneability and the 1 1/2 octave range. The fingering on the MO is basically the same as a recorder and, yes, it IS chromatic! I’m not sure I’d invest in the wood version, though…

I’m pretty sure that
Walden:ocarinas what The Undisputed:whistles.
I am certain the statement would be true if you subbed “origami” for “ocarina.”
I fell in love with the ocarina sound due to

Nancy plays Ocarina, oboe and english horn.
Wonderful stuff!
I have a small, cheap plastic ocarina.

I was hoping to get an ocarina for Christmas this past year but a concertina fell into my lap instead. Maybe next year.
I got to whistles through my love of ocarinas. I have hundreds of them! Well, maybe only a hundred. But lots. I’m also a member of the Ocarina Club on yahoo. They’ll talk you into making your own! And that’s a lot of fun–although my personal experience was that mine were never quite as good as the professionals’. . . but they can play music, and that’s rewarding, even if they are a bit lumpy.
Oh you poor poor child. ![]()

Warning! Shameless Plug!
kintailpipes I would recommend a Mountain Ocarina.
After alot of research online I bought a plastic G for my sister.
I tried it myself and the fingering was easy, very similar to the whistle.
In under 5 minutes of playing with it I could play any tune (provided it fit inside the ocarinas octave range) that I knew on the whistle, on the ocarina.
The quality felt good, it didn’t feel like a piece of cheap plastic.
I’m considering getting a C ocarina from them for myself, although I have other instruments I want as well, so its not on the top of my list.
I wouldn’t get a wooden one, at about 4 times the price, it would look nice, but I doubt it would be worth it. After reading everything I could on their website, it seems that ALL of their sound samples are the plastic ocarina and not the others. So if you like the sound samples, you’ll like the plastic ocarina.
i remember seeing a dual chamber ocinarian or something lke that anybody have one of those

Yep, definitely have them, you can play melody and accompaniment at the same time. ![]()
Some dual chambered ocarinas are made to play melody and accompaniment at the same time, as rightly told Kenny.
They can play one octave and are based on a sort of english system fingering, like Langleys for example:

Others have a second chamber (or third) to increase the range of the instrument, so the ocarina can play up to 2 octaves and half.
These are “sweet potatoes” (not english system) and you can see an example here ![]()
I love these things!!! Ocarinas get a bad rapp because they are limited to 12 notes. Here is a youtube video of a Triple Ocarina to diprove that!

Play the “Ocarina Guru” (Mountain Ocarina) video in the side bar too!
These versatile instruments favor the odd harmonics for a mellow tone. Even high pitches can be played quiet with a sweet tone.

My Dad had an ocarine (he called it a “sweet potato”) that he got in Italy during WWII. It was molded from clay with a cork plug in the fat end and painted blue. I was under the impression that clay was the material of choice for the ocarina. I wonder what happened to it?
