Ocarina question

Hi,

Today I got my kids (and me!) an ocarina from the dulcimer festival I was at, and now want to know how to finger it. It’s a clay “sweet potato” kind, I don’t know the maker but it has the initials “A.H.H.” on the bottom. It has six holes on top and two finger holes on the bottom, as well as a vent. Any ideas? My daughter is doing quite well half-holing the bottom finger holes to get different notes, but my guess is that this is not the easiest way to play!

Thanks!
Robin

Just hang around and wait for Walden to turn up.

He’s the Ocarina man

Walden’s Ocarina Land

This is my guess, but I don’t know:

xxxxxx|xx do
xxxxxo|xx re
xxxxoo|xx mi
xxxooo|xx fa
xxoooo|xx sol
xooooo|xx la
oooooo|xx ti
oooooo|ox do
oooooo|oo re

It’s also possible that it’s more like this:

xxxxxx|xx do
xxxxxo|xx re
xxxxoo|xx mi
xxxooo|xx fa
xxxooo|xo sol
xxoooo|xo la
xooooo|xo ti
oooooo|xo do
oooooo|oo re

It’s probably chromatic, so that if xxxxoo|xx is E, then xxxxox|xx is Eb.

I still think ocarinas look like Buck Rogers ray guns. If someone hadn’t invented the theremin, they would have played that Twilight Zone theme on an ocarina!

Yeah.
