Apparently David Sibley and some other ornithologists have challenged the video cited in J. W. Fitzpatrick et al., Science 308, 1460 (2005) as evidence that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker was sighted. They think the video does not rule out the possibility that the bird was a Pileated Woodpecker.
This is the url of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology page for the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. If you look along the file folders on the left hand side you will see one called “Latest Updates”. Click on that and then there will be an update called “Latest Challenge” or something similar that will describe the situation. It is a very neat website, lots of things to see actually.

This is the url for the Technical Comment in Science written by Sibley, et al. talking about what they think the problems are. I haven’t read it yet. It really doesn’t look like it would mean much to me—way above my head in terms of what I would know.

We reanalyzed video presented as confirmation that an ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) persists in Arkansas (Fitzpatrick et al., Reports, 3 June 2005, p. 1460). None of the features described as diagnostic of the ivory-billed woodpecker eliminate a normal pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus). Although we support efforts to find and protect ivory-billed woodpeckers, the video evidence does not demonstrate that the species persists in the United States.

He looks so funny!
Sweet funny.
Anything that goofy looking is going down.

That sure looks like one to me.
Maybe, just maybe, the ivory bill’ll become a conspiracy theory like Nessie–something everybody knows exists but nobody ever sees. ![]()
I don’t believe Nessie exists. Nor Bigfoot. Nor Yeti. No extraterrestrial visitors.
Yes, but what is your position on the existence of Special Food?
Ha ha! I clicked on this thread and one of the banner ads above the posting proclaimed “Get Rid Of Woodpeckers!” ![]()
Mine said, “NIXALITE Bird Control Products.” On first read, I thought it said birth control, which wasn’t really surprizing given the subject of woodpeckers.
That looks SOOOO much like a pileated. The pileated woodpecker has an unusual “gait” to its flying. This looks just like it to me. Of course I’ve never seen an ivory-billed, but I nearly stepped on a pileated last week while I was running. Almost stepped on a juvy (not meant as a disparagement
) black racer, a chipmunk, and a box turtle, too.
