Very groovy stuff that. Let’s hope people will leave them alone… but I seriously doubt it.

That valley is in Irian Jaya which has a strong and highly active separatist movement. I can’t see Indonesia opeing this area up to tourists any time soon.

I know a lot of people think they are stunningly beautiful, but I personally can’t help but think most birds of paradise are some of the ugliest, bulgy-eyed, most mis-shapen and oddly colored birds I have ever seen.

I’m still glad they found another one, though.

Well, I have a confession. I’m an ugly, bulgy-eyed, misshapen and oddly-coloured bird of paradise actually. My bulgy eyes come in quite handy for seeing all around without swivelling my head too much and for spotting predators, even to the side of me. I may be a funny shape but it’s great for hopping from branch to branch and getting through thick undergrowth. And, only last week, a friend of mine who has slightly duller colours than mine got cross with me because my even-odder-than-his bright colours enabled me to get the girl we were both chasing! :slight_smile:

Funny thing is, a couple of days ago some really weird big animals walking on two legs ( :laughing: ) came into our forest. They had really ugly, skinny, dull-coloured bodies and seemed to have loose flaps of skin hanging off them that didn’t even seem to be proper parts of their bodies. In fact I could make out that they had really naked, horrible pink skin under those flaps. Disgusting. And, on top of that, they were making strange miserable-sounding low noises with their mouths. One of my friends who reckons he’d seen these animals before reckons that a lot of them do this to each other all the time. I think he called it “moaning.”
