Needless to say, I’ve already written the fellow asking whether he can fit pegs for various size cylindrical-bore flutes. He said on his site he can customize …
Wonder if he can include a cupholder for my Diet Coke?
SSSSSHHH! That’s the beauty of it! I think it cost me almost half that to build my klunky, non-folding, non-portable version (especially if you count the additional costs due to mis-cuts, wrong-sized dowels, etc. ).

I have this stand (for Boehm flute and picc). It’s a great stand, and I love the way it folds up and pops into a bag. (I have 2 other stands, but I’m liking this one the best). I must have flute stand obsessive acquisition disorder (FSOAD).
I don’t like it. Begging to be knocked down or tripped over.
The only safe place for a flute is apart and in the case,
for the ten seconds it takes to do that.
Even in your hands or on your lap it’s vulnerable.
I think even hanging from a mike stand is better.
A simple and elegant design. Solid oak and brass. Looks sturdy.
Looks a bit like a wooden flute case…
Now how about this idea for your case makers:
Make a flute case out of solid hardwood,
router the bays for the flute pieces and space for some dowels,
fit a locking device (!) and holes for the dowels,
and you got a flute box which can act as a flute stand as well.
If he trusts his $12,000 flute to one, that makes me feel reasonably OK about mine. I also like the opportunity for the things to drain a bit. Still haven’t heard from him, but since he says he can do custom sizes I figure I’ll see what happens. We play at a few festivals plus some other “stand-up” things each year, and I switch between flute and whistle a lot; I’ve also proven in certain sit-down situations that my lap can be even dodgier than the floor ( !), so I’m willing to give it a go.
I have one, custom fitted for my various different musical lives. One setup includes a straight head alto flute, which is pretty darned tall, and even so, it feels quite stable. Cocusflute makes a good point about ALL flute stands, but when you need 2 or 3 items out for a set or concert, packing and unpacking sometimes isn’t really an option. This stand maker dude is quite pleasant to deal with, and the construction is solid, if not absolutely minutely perfect. I give it a 4-2/3 out of 5 stars.
