When I end up on a stage, I often have a mixed set of instruments that I need to keep handy/safe/assembled and tuned. I have used tubes strapped to a music or mic stand, either with or without the head of the stand, but even padded, I am not happy about the keywork being protected adequately. My worst fear is the kicking over of the whole lot by other band members, myself or by the sound technicians (if any). I am not in the league of having roadies to keep them all offstage and hand them to me ready warmed up and tuned… The highest risk is not actually while playing, but in the waiting between playing, once everything has been set up. We are a bit of a low profile and somewhat musically diverse group at the moment which leads to small, crowded stages…
I was wondering if some variant on the case theme could be worked out - if there are ideas then I can make things myself. It would need to be a case where instruments can be held assembled and that is capable of standing up itself stably to present the instruments for use. It need not close with the instruments assembled, but it should allow safe storage of all the instruments in a format no bigger than a small flattish suitcase. (Suitable for chucking in back of car…)
Current set of instruments would be:
D flute with keys
Keyless F Flute
Boehm flute (not always)
Bflat Clarinet
G, A, C, D whistles.
If it works out then I would be thinking of a similar case setup for one or more bagpipes (Highland, SSP, Schäferpfeife?).
The floor footprint should not be too large and it shouldn’t be too obtrusive a presence on the stage. I imagine having it standing slightly behind and to the side of me. This probably means having the instruments upright.
The closed/disassembled format could involve removable trays? Though they are something else to keep track of.
The option to pick up and carry the case/stand with the instruments ready to go would also be useful for busking…
I am thinking of something for my own use, though I might investigate making similar things for other people later, but that would require much more professionalism in my woodworking skills. Assuming wood is the was to go, which I would prefer on aesthetic grounds.
(I am aware of existing “spike” clarinet and flute stand, but I do not trust them due to their instability and the load that they put on the bottom joints of the instrument)
