So, the other day I had an idea for a flute stand that others might find useful. I’ve never liked the designs that involve a rod holding the flute vertically, just seems too easy to knock over, and hard to aim for when changing instruments onstage. I’ve only ever wanted a stand when I’m playing on stage or the odd session where a table isn’t handy, and I usually end up just leaving (or rather, dropping) my flute on the flute on the floor or on its case beside me, also not ideal. I just wanted something to hold the flute up slightly higher than the case, so I don’t have to really bend over at all, light, small, and with high stability.
I cut a piece of 1 1/2" ABS pipe, cut it length ways to form the flute rest, padded it with this sort of grippy foam. I drilled a hole through which I screwed a JOBY camera tripod. Voila, a handy flute stand.
It’s perfect if I set it up on my flute case, but heck, it’ll even wrap around a mic stand, chair, whatever.

I’d say it looks pretty futuristic, but very functional and well executed. All the better if you need that kind of stand-if you have room for the horizontal version instead of the more trad vertical one.
It’s sure less of a fall if it comes off of the stand too, though I imagine it could be kicked off, just as a vertical one can be toppled easily with a good bump or kick. Think I’d prefer some kind of sheath myself, or quiver maybe, but it’s probably not practical. I play only at home, so I have no worries that way-and don’t have a wooden flute anymore either!
But nice idea, and well executed, for sure! No doubt you guys out there on the prarie have more horizontal space than we do here in the East!
Interesting and clever.
For a floor stand, obviously you want to keep the instrument off the floor. But for a (horizontal) table stand, I find a simple plush cloth to be stable, practical, and cheap. Anything that holds the instrument above the table gives it that much distance to fall …
Having a big old Gitzo designed to hold a 4x5 view camera standing behind me I had, in my mind, pictured something a bit different from a Gorilla Pod. Having cats around the place though, I wouldn’t trust it to be safe for my own use.
