nice experience for newbie

Yesterday evening I dropped my kid off at Children’s choir and went down
the hall to special part of the church that has a really tall, steep-angled
ceiling. The acoustics are great, it’s like playing at the rim of the grand
canyon  So there I am just noodling, doing long tones and slides and
rolls, sort of randomly. Meanwhile our pastorlady is setting stuff up in
that room. After a while she says “That was so cool, would you be willing to
play this for the youth service in May?” “Play what?” “Just, whatever you
just played!” She said that the sound of it was very breathy, flowing, and
made her think of “the breath of the spirit”.

Hmm…so my weak, breathy tone sounded good to her. “It’s not a bug, it’s a
feature”

I guess that for most people the Irish flute is such an unusual instrument
that they enjoy the uniqueness of its voice even if it’s not being played
very skillfully.

I came home grinning from ear to ear!

It’s a lively, provocative instrument at its core. I am not surprised at that reaction. I had similar experiences when I used to sit on the front lawn of a historical mansion while waiting for my son to finish his gymnastics sessions. Could barely cut at that point, but the melodies were enjoyable and the whistle sounded good…

It’s just a cool instrument. I think right now I’m a bit infatuated

Wonderful story! Expressing yourself freely with the whistle or any other instrument is what it’s all about. I can’t wait to hear about your playing in May.

It is nice to play in a venue with excellent acoustics. Quiet whistles can fill a spacious hall when the acoustics are good. On a flute every nuance can be heard, and it can be a magical experience.

Caroluna..
Beautiful story!
P.S. Many of us, around here, have been at it for a long time, and are still infatuated!!! (Even grumpy old men, like me…) Enjoy!
