end of the first week with new CB flute

Now that you’ve all been privy to the intimate inner details of my new flute in another thread, I decided to start over and properly gush over it. I am truly pleased to have a reason other than blatant voyeurism for visiting this forum. It was a gamble to go ahead and buy a flute, never having played more than a minute or two on other folks’ instruments. Fortunately for me I had some great encouragement from people here, and I’m really glad I did it. My new-to-me Casey Burns keyless, blackwood, is a wonderful thing to play. I have a long long way to go before I’ll really be able to make it sing, but oooh do we have some lovely moments already. I played it at a fundraiser Saturday night, and a little bit in church this morning. I feel like introducing everyone to it, as if I had a new beau.

Nobody in the whistle forum told me about that glorious buzz in your fingertips when the wood resonates! :astonished:

Thanks for the great support and advice given here.
Jennie

Playing flute can be a magical thing…much more so than the whistle IMHO. Don’t get me wrong, I still love whistle, but playing flute is just more of a religious experience for me.

Eric

Religious experience! That was the word I was looking for! Couldn’t agree more Eric. The wooden flute is the most magical instrument I’ve ever played.

Congratulations, Jenny for having the courage to take the leap of faith, and see where it lead you! Aren’t you glad you did? Sometimes fears hold us back from the most delightful things, isn’t that a shame?

Aye, it’s a long and twisty road ahead, but if you hang on through all the bumps, it’s one heck of a ride! I’m enjoying the flute too, even more than I could have expected. As someone said, you are half of the instrument with the flute, and integral part that becomes more intimate as you spend the time together.  And, glad to be here!

As for the long and twisty road, I’m on it. Elation at being able to play, frustration with my measly two-measure breath span, puzzlement when one minute’s golden tones fade and rasp, worry about developing bad hand position, relief that there’s at least someone to talk to about it here. Consistency would be nice. I hope the road evens out at some point so I can worry less about driving this thing and start enjoying the scenery.

Jennie

For me it was three months till consistency;
at about nine months things really start
to take off. But I confess i’m too driven,
I really want to be GOOD. Best not
to drive oneself crazy!

What a good idea playing in church. Next best thing to a jail if you want a captive audience !

if you play at a cemetery, at least you’ll know for sure that your playing did not kill any one.
but yes - for Adrenalin, prison must be #1, that or a Hockey?boxing match

Playing the flute may seem like a religious experience to some of you because of the way it can deprive the brain of oxygen.

Haha, probably very true Andrew.

Thank you, William James.
