Humbling, yet cool, streetplaying experience

So, there I was sitting on a street corner playing during my lunch break yesterday, I’d had fun playing for a manager who was out walking her infant around the block (and was a covert Scottish/Irish music fan), when this construction worker walks up to me and starts asking questions about my flute.

Well, he asked if he could try it, and man was he good. Whatever he played was latin sounding…perhaps Charanga? I was utterly amazed my Seery could sound like that - it was like an Uberpratten sound. After saying he really liked my flute and saying it had a great tone, to which I could only agree, he wandered off to grab lunch.

It’s times like this that remind me that I’ve only been playing this stick with holes in it for a short period of time and I’ve still got a lot to work on.

Boy, it’s amazing who you run into sometimes, isn’t it? Who’da thunk, walking down the street, that this random guy would know how to play a simple-system flute?

Cool story!

What a story, just walked up out of nowhere and played! Wow! I suspect
that doesn’t happen to often anywhere.

Great story.

I was pretty surprised how well the guy could play, but it did explain why he kept looking over at me while working before he came my way.

I also once had a fellow bus rider find me practicing in a nearby park during lunch, and he told me his sister had his great grandfather’s flute which was a lot like mine but with one key on the end. Hoping against hope it was just sitting in a trunk somewhere and I might be able to nab it for a fair price, I asked a few innocent questions about where they had it stored, but she has always played it herself. Well, no great find for me, but at least it’s being played.
