WHOA has struck again.
Have two incredible new whistles, a VSB Susato D which is way way nicer than I thought it would be, and a Dixon 1-piece D than is just incredible, smooth, pure, clear, limpid, crystal, a sound like sunshine on liquid honey.
Also bought a 2-piece Clare, mainly for the novelty of having a 2-piece whistle. It’s not bad, bell note is a little sharp (why am I learning to expect that on cheap whistles?), but nothing a little tape can’t fix. Actually it’s a pretty nice whistle too but not in the same league as the Dixon.
But the Susato and the Dixon are wonderful. Both are the most chromatic whistles I’ve ever played, also. B-flats and A-flats in both octaves are easy to hit and in tune…I was even able to play a low D-sharp on the Dixon by half-holing. Don’t bother trying that on any other inexpensive whistle.
You know the irony of this, though? I have finally found a whistle that really does sound like a recorder. I have a very nice soprano recorder in African blackwood with a lovely lilting tone. The Dixon’s tone is a dead ringer for it. Not bad, for a whistle that costs under $20, to sound like an instrument that costs over $200.
