dixon: from hate to love

I had never thought this would actually happen…but last few days I have started to LIKE my dixon soprano D instead of hate it.
WHY?
Because I found it easier to play now I am taking lessons and have learned to better breathe …
I also find that the flat lower notes are not as bad as I thought…
And the overall sound is very different from my jerrytone.
The dixon play so much easier now that I almost thought it was a different whistle :smiley:
So: if you ever get a whistle you don’t like even after a week of playing (I have been playing this one for more than a month!) don’t give up but try again now and then and who knows…
life is full of surprises…NICE ones too at times.

Your post reinforces my belief that lots of folks get whistles like Dixon / Susato / Syn before they are really ready for them…lots of times a whistle they really don’t like at first they can come back to a bit later and be very pleasantly surprised.

I have a Dixon, and it’s a good whistle…I really enjoy playing it. It was one of the first whistles I got that would play easily and consistently into the 3rd octave when needed.

It’s fun to realize you’re getting better and having more control over your instrument–enjoy your sense of accomplishment!

I too like Dixons, liked them right away, but had been playing awhile before they came out.

Dixon’s RULE!!!

My favorite soprano D (out of about eight) and my current favorite Low D (but only have two, the other a Howard, and they are SOOOOO different that I don’t even bother to compare them).

I don’t own one but I played one at a whistle party that was one of the best whistles I ever tried. On another occasion, I played the same model but it was sorta average. I still can’t figure out why the first was so smooth, balanced and fun to play. Sounded great too.

I just acquired a Dixon low E (great for playing along with singers) from Bigwhistle. I spelled your name wrong but thank you anyway, Mr Wetyer! :smiley: Brilliant.

Since I’m now used to the breath requirements of Chieftains/Overtons, I do need to mind out the way I play it. See, my first whistle was…what was it…a Walton’s, then a second-hand Overton, then Mack Hoover (and this and that and…well) Almost like that Hoover (NB) on this Dixon…I must breath into it and it still plays beautifully. Or maybe I need a more focused embouchure… Now, I now know this narrowed down the probably-the-last low whistle (low C in fact) I’d like to own. :smiley:
