new user here looking to buy..

Hi my name is Shawn and I live in Ontario in Canada.. and I’ve developed a keen interest for the pennywhistle.. unfortunately, I don’t know where to buy one! I checked the internet and found a place in the states.. but would really like to avoid the shipping costs and all the other costs that go with it.

Is there any place in canada I can order one from (aside from ebay)?

I don’t pay for stuff electronically over the internet so I would really like somewhere in canada that I could either a) get to physically or b) mail a money order to or whatnot.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you email any of the whistle stores listed on C&F, you’ll probably find most will accept a money order. Shipping shouldn’t be that much, given the small size of a whistle. Of course, given the small price of a whistle, shipping may still exceed the cost of the whistle!

You might also check with the music stores in your area. Many music stores will carry a few whistles as novelty items. Novelty whistles are usually Clarkes (either original or Sweetone), Waltons or Generations. Any of these would make a good first whistle, especially the Clarkes.

About the beginners whistle, I think the Sweetone is a great beginners whistle.

Here’s a well respected whistle maker from Canada:

Good luck.

Isn’t Sandy Jasper in Canada? Elfsong whistles is the brand. Haven’t played one personally but hear nice things…pretty sure she’s in BC.

Just googled her. Sandy is, in fact, a Canook.

If you’re a Canadian, mail ordering from the U.S. can be killer.

Our beleaguered Canuck brethren not only must pay the actual shipping charge, but also possible customs duties, goods and services tax and sales taxes, and customs brokerage fees.

So, you can see why Canadians usually prefer to buy domestic. :astonished:

Hmmm… It doesn’t cost me much more at all to ship to Canada. As for the duties, I’m not sure, but I thought that US made items were not charged duty on entering Canada or Mexico.

I live in Ottawa and have bought multiple whistles from the US both on eBay and here on C&F. Only once was I charged for Customs, taxes and Broker fees and that was because the whistle was shipped via UPS. I actually managed to get the taxes and customs fees back. If you request that the item be shipped via USPS and marked as a gift then there is never a problem - at least not from my experience. With the CDN $ almost at par right now there are a lot of deals south of the border.

Just to clarify, if shipping something to Canada, should I not choose UPS? I am not looking to circumvent legitimate fees but what would be the preferable way to ship something to Canada? USPS?

Based on my experience USPS is preferable. There are always Broker fees charged when UPS is used.

hmm interesting…

I had heard of the woman in BC, and unfortunately I don’t have paypal so I cant get one from o’brian - as it is my mother who wants to get me this for my birthday and she won’t do any transactions online.. as my father is a banker and she is an accountant and they don’t trust the internet that way..

I was really hoping to see if there was somewhere in ontario that sold them.. and I have still to check local music stores.. altho its hard to contact them for when i get home theyre all closed..

I think O’Brien will take other forms of payment. You should e-mail him. I got my Stowaway a few days ago, and have been having a blast playing it. I can’t wait till I can get a Rover to try out.

where is O’Brien situated?

He’s in Chilliwack, Canada.
