Just noticed James Cullinan will be launching his solo recording ‘Here it is’, and it’s about time too.

One of Clare’s finest fiddle players, he previously recorded the gorgeous ‘Happy to meet’ with PJ Crotty. Backing by Steve Cooney Mick Conneely, Kevin Crawford and Carol Cullinan.

I bump this one up. I got my copy in Custy’s this morning, having missed the launch during the Ennis Trad fest on Sunday (we went walking in East Clare up the mountains near Kilbane/Broadford and got muddy and damp on the bog around the summit of Cragnamurragh, too muddy to go to the Old Ground Hotel on the way back, as was the original plan).
The CD is playing in the background as I am writing and it is a lovely one, a great companion to Tony Linnane’s recording that came out some two years ago, if you’re into this style of Clare fiddle playing (and why wouldn’t you be?). Realach records and Jack Talty are to be commended for getting these wonderful fiddle players to record. Cullinan’s CD has a lovely cover design and it’s great to see they got Con Kelleher to take care of the photography as the snaps used for the Linnane CD cover, well, left something to be desired.

Anyhow, a lovely selection of tunes, played beautifully.
Just as an aside, I just turned the tellie on over coffee during the dead end of the afternoon and landed in a repeat of an old Geantrai, recorded in Doolin. Lovely Clare music with loads of familiar faces that all looked terribly young. Anyhow, there was a segment with James Cullinan and PJ Crotty, a reminder what lovely duet they had and what gorgeous settings they played. They are on second, after Andrew MacNamara and Terry Bingham.
This is the one: Geantraí, Doolin but all episodes are here: Geantraí. Good for a binge watch over the Christmas.
