New CD from Matt Molloy and John Cary

Heard a rumour that anew CD was out by Matt Molloy and JOhn Carty but can’t find anything about it on Matt Molloy’s site. Anyone know anything about it

This on John Carty’s website from a Google search…

“John performs regularly with Chieftain’s flautist Matt Molloy exploring the North Connaught tradition they both love. A CD of their music accompanied by Arty McGlynn will be launched shortly”

There have been rumors about an album from the two of them for a while. I believe things got held up and I’m not sure if its still in the works.

Just looked up John Carty’s website, thanks for the link and got this…

"Press Release

Pathway to the Well, a duet album featuring Matt Molloy on flute and John Carty on fiddle with accompaniement from Arty McGlynn will be released in January 2008 during a short Irish tour…

Preview copies of the CD will be available shortly to loyal website viewers only. To express an interest please contact info@johncartymusic.com"

Hope I qualify

That’s great. Should be a fantastic album.

“A while” is putting it mildly, Brendan. I was at the Feakle Festival in August 2003 and Matt and John did a brilliant set there, during which they mentioned from stage that they would soon be doing a recording together. As we all know, time flows differently in Ireland than it does everywhere else. OTOH, I recall Catherine McEvoy telling me that she and her brother John had completed the recording of the album they did together, and it was another two or even three years after that before it finally was released. So there may be hope yet for Matt Molloy and John Carty. Perhaps they have something “in the can” by now and the holdup is elsewhere. We’ll probably not know until it gets released, and if it doesn’t get released we’ll never know…

Oops, looks like I got scooped while I was typing my reply. Damn my two slow typing fingers!

it’s here:

I couldn’t resist. I have just ordered a copy. My wife might kill me though.

Cheers,

Sweet. My fingers are crossed that Carty will pick up the banjo for a track or two.

I’ve taken the plunge! Christmas is coming… I ordered the James Carty album that’s on the website too on the strength of the sound clip provided.

Got my copy. It’s a breath of fresh air! Great playing, simple and stylish. No banjo!

No banjo. :frowning:

Unless it’s Kieran Hanrahan playing, who cares “no banjo”?

Either you’ve never heard John Carty playing banjo, or we have vastly different tastes. For my money, his recent banjo album is easily one of the top 10 ITM albums made in the 21st century.

You’re right, I haven’t, but then, I’m not especially interested in (but not unappreciative or disliking of) banjo. I might well share your taste and love it, though I can’t imagine a solo banjo album making it into any top 10 of mine, if I bothered doing such lists. Anyway, I was being (rather obviously, I thought) totally flippant, following on from previous posts. (Not flippant about Hanrahan - best plectrum technique I’ve ever heard - I love his contribution to the old Stockton’s Wing albums - what has happened to those lads? Roche, Lennon and K Hanrahan were all stunning - better than many who have made bigger names for themselves!)

Some people are sitting at a table arguing in a crowded pub.
On of them loudly says, for the entire pub to hear,
“All banjo players are morons.”
A hush falls over the pub.
A man in the back stands up and says,
“I resent that remark.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” the first man says,
“Are you an banjo player?”
“No,” he says, “I’m a moron.”

no that’s not true.
i didn’t say “i resent that remark”
i said “i resemble that remark”
get it right will ya?

IIRC it was Kevin Burke who said of banjo players: “When they’re great, they’re good.”

n.b.: i pick a bit of the stringéd bodhran myself, and i’m partial to Carty’s plectrology on both tenor banjo and tenor guitar.

jem, I don’t actually have a top ten list; I was just looking for a handy way of conveying how good I think Carty’s banjo album is. (The new banjo album, I will If I Can – I’ve never heard the old one.) I honestly can’t think of four new ITM albums from the last 7 years I like better than it, so top ten was a safe choice that allowed for some forgetfulness.

I don’t have any special love of banjos – fiddle and flute is more my thing. But I do have a great love of tasteful ITM melodic and rhythmic variation, and Carty’s album has it in spades. And the great thing is, because it is banjo (or occasionally tenor guitar) with minimal accompaniment, it is really easy to hear every single note he plays. It’s like an audio textbook which is massively fun to listen to.
