nevermind, no whistles here

Edit:

Nevermind. No whistles here, just some holes in a tube. Those of you who wrote encouragement, thank you very much.

Those of you who wrote otherwise, sorry to have wasted your time.

I am interested in making a low D whistle. But how do I know how to space the holes and what diameter are they.

Woohoo! Looks and sounds great, congrats!
Soon as you get 'em perfected, you know I’m gonna be asking for one.

Congratz, Ava! It looks great. Great sound too!

[edited because I found the mp3 link in Ava’s original post. ]

I am impressed, Beth! Did you make it with Mack?

It would seem that there will be many new whistle makers to choose from in the very near future… this forum seems to be spawning them left and right.
Congratulations on completing your first whistle, it looks and sounds very nice.

Hi Jessie - nope, made it on my own this week, though the mouthpiece is one of Mack’s whitecaps. A LBW head from the Whistle Shop also fits (and was what I planned on using) but this one gave a better sound in the second octave.

Oh, so you made a tube.

chuckle

Yes. But it certainly improves the sound of the mouthpiece!

Oh Av, be still my heart!

Philo

You have the right idea, Avanutria. I need to learn to make my own whistles too.

Beautiful job Ava, the bar code decorations look great!

That’s the stuff that makes Water Weasels charming!

Rather, it is the Chiff and Fipple Bar Code of Authenticity.

And you thought all those years in engineering school were for naught.

Congrats Beth, it’s very cool.

What utter Tosh!
If you are going to clam to have made your own whistle, you have to make it all. Not just drill six holes in a bit o pipe.
By the way the B hole is in the wrong place.

Nice job, Beth! All you skeptics out there - drilling holes in a tube is easy. Knowing where and what diameter to make them, and then actually accomplishing that, is what makes it a real whistle. Looks like Beth has done just that!

Beth, if you write to Cyfiawnder he can tell you a very good and quite simple way to make a head for your whistle. I don’t want to steal his thunder. Trust me, his way is much simpler than mine, which involves machine tools and brass!

I dunno, Stacey, that B hole looks okay to me… Maybe Beth should send us each one so we can check out her work - whatcha think?

Beth, remember a few months ago when you posted something about trying to figure out what to do for a career? Seriously, you ought to think about it. If you get started at your age, you could become one of the great ones one day!

Maybe you’re slightly overreacting, Ava…

Having one critical answer out of two pages doesn’t mean :
a) anyone complained of his wasting his time
b) you should exert seppuku on your own thread…

C’mon , don’t sulk. Else, you will have plenty hard times following the rewarding but not all-honey path in life quite interestingly suggested just above by Paul… Or any career, don’t you think?
Why don’t you proceed, with the same base–a secured tube–to build a mouthpiece? Your best answer to criticism will be a “So there!”. All you risk is a few pennies and end up with the dream voice you ever wished and never found in a low whistle.
