Never mind Merry Christmas ...

… what Christmas tunes are you all playing on your pipes?

Being heavily influenced by the Chieftains, Bells of Dublin, I’ve failed miserably at learning “Oh, Holy Night” (sounds more like Oh, Canada when I play it). A steady 3rd octave D would really help.

“Ding Dong Merrily on High” sounds like an O’Carolan melody and the pipes make a reasonable go at it.

“Il est né” also sounds good on the pipes.

Here’s what I have in the ol’ magazine:

-Il est Né
-Joy to the World
-We Three Kings
-3 Ships
-Wexford Carol
-Once in David’s City
-Holly and The Ivey
-The Boar’s Head
-Bleak Midwinter

Two jigs I play together because they sound so gosh-darn Christmassy are "Jack Coehn’s (called “Leg of the Duck” by Declan Masterson) and Humours of Kilkenny.

ye could try the 3 part Reel Christmas Eve

The First Noel
Oh Holy Night
O Come All Ye Faithful
The Lord of the Dance (not really a Christmas tune, but one of my wife’s favorite hymns).

My third D is behaving quite nicely so I have been playing ‘O Holy Night’.

I’ve also been playing ‘Hark the Herald Angels’ in G and ‘Silent Night’ in D.

For ideas of Carols on pipes, there are a couple of good albums by Eric Rigler with a few tunes that work well on pipes (‘Christmas in Ireland’ & ‘Celtic Christmas’).
